SAVE A STUMP SHOOT A DEER

I like shots that make you think, that take you out of your comfort zone. Who wants to shoot everything standing broadside at 20 yards, not me. It does not mean that you are going to take the shot at a live animal. I think......that is why they call it a "shoot".

Steve in Canton

One of the first things they teach you in hunter safety courses is to never shoot unless you know what is in the background.  I do not care if this in a so called controlled environment or not you should not shoot unless you know for a fact where your arrow is going to land.  Very unethical shot to practice.

monkeyball

Steve,
As far as outdoor 3-d shoots go, I do not think you really ever know where your arrow is going to land in the event of a miss, otherwise no one would ever lose any arrows.

Now where did that arrow go........

Cool....thanks for sharing.

It thought he was real on my phone till I blew it up.   :biglaugh:

I bet I could hit that hollow tree trunk nearly every time, the turkey targets beyond it? Maybe if I came up short, flinched and lofted one over the top.

Don't want to jinx our record but this was our 21st spring bowhunters festival and my 10th setting up and our record speaks for itself...I personally are more afraid of seeing what I saw at shoots  this year. Alcohol on the course. If we miss one of us always stay at the target anyway so we can be seen.

Longbow58

Sorry Monkeyball I hope Lori recovered from that traumatic experience. Now I know why she looks at me like that.

Steve,
We're likely pretty close to each other.  I am Colin in Hartville.  Anyway, I have 4 kids.  I drill them - "know your target and what is beyond".  You have to, and with kids you have to drill that, no matter the weapon and no matter the scenario.  Not everyone transcends environments and scenarios the same.  You can't rely on everyone being able to make the same judgment call in a real life scenario.

I like a "fun" shot here and there - steel ring, through the log etc...but know your target and beyond.

I generally take my comment "Know your target and beyond" a bit further with my older kids, "No game animal, not one, is worth the risk of any human life."

The shot listed here is a PERFECT opportunity to have that discussion.  Do you take that shot if that's the biggest buck you've ever seen and it's at 15 yards?  The key is to try to never put yourself in the position of having to wrestle with that.

I would hope they have the area behind it roped off very well; in the wild, yeah that would be concerning.  Were I setting the course would I set that target....(I do plenty of target setting, I'm an officer of our 3D club)....I would have to think about it.

Yes sirs all 350 plus acres of the scout reservation were posted and marked. Like I stated previously we strive for safety and all agreed that the shot was safe we know what was behind our target. Thanks

MGBSRB

I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I understand the concept of knowing what is behind your target. I was taught that every since I picked up my first weapon. I have instilled that same concept in my son. That being said, I have helped Longbow58 for many years setting up 3D courses at numerous clubs. This shoot is a fund raiser to help support the boy scouts and the clubs that run it. It has been said many times through out this forum that the scout reservation is completely shut down, signs posted stating there is a live archery shoot happening, and roped/taped off where needed. Staff members policing the courses for any unsafe shots or activity. I can assure you that this shot is safe. As for the real deal senerio, you must know your limits. Distance, shooting ability, the lay of the land your hunting, etc. I know my abilities and limits and the lay of the land I hunt, and if this shot was within my limits/abilities, I would take the shot.  Thanks.

I think we could all agree(or should agree anyhow) that the yeh's  outnumber the neh's  here. The whole reason I posted the picture is simply because it was such an awesome setting and a really nice target. These guys go way out of there way to set up some super courses. Appreciate it for what it is,not what you think it could be.

Thanks for all the response. Good Shooting,

Those are some shots that really make you concentrate, I like 'em.

easy shot,,, but you simply cannot be afraid or worried about losing arrows.

anyone who is nervous about losing or destroying a nice pretty arrow is only handicapping themselves and chances are the shot will be low on that target.

I have awesome snag built woodies that I love but when I'm shooting I have that mentality that I could care less what happens to them and I usually leave with all my arrows and a decent score or I'm satisfied with my hits.
"Us vs Them"

I am sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion.  I am sure it is a safe shot for practice, but I always worry that someone who is not experienced would see that shot in a practice situation and think it is ok to shoot at an animal posed like this.

Thumper Dunker

Cool target. If your not breaking or losing arrows your not having fun. Use your best arrow and hit it.
You can hop but you can't hide.
If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.

Longbow58

Not offended at all here. Just my take on...it doesn't always look as what it is. I truly believe we all want the same thing to teach and mentor our future hunters to be safe and take ethical shots. Having everyone going home safe and happy with the shots on my courses is my goal. I also set shots quartering to but teach my 9 year old grandson this is a no-no with a bow. Don't think Monkeyball thought this picture would get so many hits but thanks buddy I like all the comments.
