Personally, I grab the best flying arrow I have, pick a spot, concentrate on form, and then make the shot.
Me too. Then I head for the next target with a lighter quiver.    ;)

I agree to never shoot at a sky lined critter but in a  controlled environment, I feel these shots that play with your mind should be more prominent.

If there was a flag or person to stand on top to let others know of people down below looking for arrows.  Have at it.

Personally I differ from the above post where I would give my money to clubs who offer targets that play with your head.

Yeah, that's a target where you use your old worst arrow for sure!
I think that is the wrong approach grabbing a bad arrow anticipating a miss. You are setting yourself up for failure... I would use the best arrow i had and pick a spot.... Then drill it.

I've shot with guys before who worry more about loosing an arrow than focusing on the shot, and they loose more arrows doing it too.

No balls, No glory! is my way of looking at it.

I've shots lots of targets like this. Hit some and missed some. No big deal.

I love it. Grab my best arrow and drill it.
Or not, but not afraid to try. It's only an arrow.
I figure if it's a shot I would take at a real animal, then I'd go for it.

I try to take a few arrows to shoots that should be retired for tomato stakes.  This target would get this arrow!

Guys rest assured the shot seen was safely placed and the whole mountain was shut down and posted live archery shoot in progress. Top thing on my clubs list is safety and this shot was very safe. Looks are deceiving and I know my course backdrops. Behind that  target was at least a 100 yd. bench. Not as bad as it seems sometime. We had 850+ shooters and the only complaint was the walk they had to take. I wish I could talk more trad guys into coming to check our shoot out but we are mixed in with wheel bows and that seems to be a problem. Thanks.

Good job buddy!

I have to agree with Longbow 58. Safety is top priority.

Great target.  3d shoots need to offer some interesting shots. If they are set up safely, they are what gives a shoot some spice.  Other wise I can stay home and shoot the same old 10-25yd boring practice shots.

Who gets to retrieve the arrows?  Best shot or worst?

Delta PA had a gator target on big flat rock, 28yds steep downhill......usually killed a few arrows every shoot but you had bragging rights for a long while if you nailed it the first shot..........Id take that shot in a heartbeat, I dont "name" my arrows so sacrificing one or two is no big deal and I often get them back when looking in the lost arrow bucket the next year..........

I don't see the need to ever place a target in that position and the clubs that do, don't get my business again. Being a "fairly" decent shot I would still pass on that target, but what about the new shooters and the younger shooters after they lose a few arrows, not fun, probably not coming back. One of our local clubs placed a target in an uncut grass field at 55 yards another club placed a target on the edge of a swamp at 45 yards, miss and your arrow is gone. I don't turn in score cards so if I skip a target or stalk up for the shot it is no big deal but I refuse to support any club that makes their money from selling "lost arrows"

Just my take on the subject

I'm with James - don't take shots like those and don't go back to clubs that set them.

Looks like a cool shot.  Yep, you might loose an arrow.  But, if I were actually hunting, I'd take the shot if it was within my range.  Also, I like to see that some mental pressure is added to the game.  Shooting under stress is different than nailing coke cans with Judo's out back and hunting involves varying degrees of success if you respect your game and are pressured for a clean kill.  The only thing I can say bad about it is that you can't see your backstop so that might be a tad dangerous normally but I would assume since this was at a shoot you could go walk it to make sure it's clean and go back to shoot.

I shot a small buck outside of New Albion Iowa on the edge of a steep break that was watching the barges go by. By the time that I got him out of the river muck and partway up the slope, I was wishing that I had missed. Flat land can be a wonderful thing.
