Couple days ago I got out for a morning sit. Went in unprepared thinking not much was gonna happen.

My back still hurts.

This hunt actually starts a couple weeks ago.
We got into a heated discussion at work. A couple guys were looking to buy corn for bait but wouldn't bother unless they could buy 50+ bags. I asked why so much ? I informed them it was Oct/Nov and acorns are dropping, how about hunting them. Over the next hour I was educated that the only way to hunt is over a pile of corn. Don't get me wrong, I put feeders up for hogs and have killed a deer or two that was munching on corn I put out. But the thought of only hunting over a pile of corn is silly IMO. These guys also have been complaining about not seeing any deer during day time but their cameras have lots of pics at night. ?????????

Same heated discussion I have with my partner at work... I let that horse lay awhile ago...

Two days after my lesson from them I shot the big hog I posted about. From the ground,  with out the use of bait. Just hunting.

One of these guys showed an interest in "real hunting" as they now call it.  So I took him with me.

I am no where as good as some on this site. I have the utmost respect for the woodsmanship I read about on here and can only hope to increase my knowledge every time I go into the woods.

We walked almost 2 miles in, I pointed some things out to him as we walked. He was like a little kid on a field trip. I Put him in a  good spot and told him not to move, be patient. With in the next 2 hours he saw seven deer, a dozen turkey and shot a 5 pt buck at 20 yds. He did not own a bow at the time BUT DOES NOW. He is 30 yrs old, has hunted his whole life and said he has never shot a deer that was not eating from a corn pile (or a deer from the ground) His eyes have been opened, and he can't stop talking about it at work.

So on to my hunt.

I went back to the same spot I put him, great area. Acorns and beech nuts dropping, funnel between swamp and hard woods.

I took my huntmore chair in since I was planning on being there for a while and wanted to be comfy. I backed up into some brush, had on my leafy suit (still too warm for the full ghillie) and started the wait. The turkeys showed up first, two groups that stayed within 10 yds of me for probably 2 hours. Why can't the do that during turkey season.

Finally the turkeys left and I hear something coming from directly behind me. I don't want to turn my head and get busted so I just let it come by. I am not picky, I love to eat wild meat, if it's legal I'm shooting.

Hey, it's a nice little doe trotting through. About 15 yards, Just as she pauses I let loose. Good hit, little far back but got her and she is down with 20 yds. I sit there shaking and not believing mu luck.

It dawns on me, the rut is starting and she may not be alone. I nock another arrow and wait.

Not 5 minutes later I hear the same noise.

Hey, this one has horns !  I did not look at them close, like I said I like meat.  He knew something was not right, His girlfriend was napping on him. He was a little nervous and I was not going to let him get any closer to her. As soon as he went behind a tree I drew back and as he cleared the arrow was gone. Perfect shot, he dropped about 20 yds past her.

Problem, I am 2 miles from my truck with 2 deer down.

Igor

Wow, that's great....and so true!

So it was 2 miles back to the truck, get the cart, 2 miles into the deer and 2 back out. I normally  would have cleaned and deboned them right there but I had no bags with me.  That will never happen again.
