Where you guys near Mike? And my answer to the question is the same as yours, lol. There are few better things in jan/feb than listening to a circling beagle. But listening to them while sitting on the couch or in bed at night is exactly the opposite! Good luck with those bunnies boys.

Believe it or not the "HARDWAY" is often the EASIER way(in hindsight)!

Actually, beagles are OK, except mine,  a "young lady" named Cricket, who became instantly famous when a certain writer named Jason wrote a fine article in a well known bowhunting magazine that starred a certain Cricket dog, and now all she does is sit around the house and demands dog biscuits and pedicures . . .and a softer pillow.

Be very careful with beagles, they are sneaky.

Here was ol'quick draw Lucas and another guy along with Daisy.  I watched a rabbit run right Between them, and all Lucas could think to do was point.  In all actuality, im glad i had the camera so I could remember this moment.  That rabbit was running so fast a shotgun wouldn't of touched it.

Great picture Mike. I'm looking for some new Beagles now Myself. I've owned several in the past.

Hardest part of teaching those Youngin's is the rabbits usually not where the dogs are. Heck I've even had trouble teaching older guys that.

Good luck.

What a great time!!! I love doing that.
Oh and to answer your question. A beagle that hunts bunnies not cheeseburgers!!! I didn't train him.

I'm sorry but I dissagree with the premise that ANYONE can "own" a beagle. Beagles (I've cohahitated with several) are people in doggy suits. They'll accept your hospitality, hunt with you (not for you)& make your truck look good while they allow you to drive them around. Don't have living here at the moment but the first chance I get I'll invite another in.

Just got back home from a hunt with two hard working beagles. The other two guys had .22 pistols and I took my bow. I jumped one and never had a shot at it. The dogs brought another back to me. We were hunting a Christmas tree farm. I could see him about 30 - 40 yards below me, cutting through the rows. I'd run a half dozen rows ahead of him and try to close in. He'd cross my row and we'd repeat - get ahead of him and move in. Finally got down to where he should have been 20 yards away, but he never crossed that last row. Had a ball! First time out this year.

Anyone can hit a snowshoed size rabbit, but it takes skill to kill a tiny rabbit.

Bretto,
In my early days my uncles were greatly amused at me always running around trying to cut the rabbit off!  I was a bit slow on the uptake as to why it seemed as if their lazy arses always killed the rabbit when all they did was plop down on the nearest stump!  I've got my own "wonder beagle" supposedly coming this spring.  I'm a lot "longer of tooth" and hopefully a bit wiser and plan to let my grandson get all the exercise.

Beagles are great!  Some of the best days with my Dad were waiting on rabbits moseying ahead of my Uncle's two beagles -- Jack and Jill.

I've hunted behind a few different beagles and been around a lot of other breeds.  I never met a beagle that understood english.  Or maybe the beagle is way too smart to take instruction from mere humans?

We got one for my daughter about five years back.  I worked with "Smokey" for a while and he turned out to be quite the blood trailer.  He's found many deer for me and a few buds.

Here's me in 1960 with my first bow killed rabbit using a 45# 1958 Kodiak Special. The beagle's name was Trump and he was my first beagle.

This is my current buddy Dolly and she loves to hunt...

Well, we just made it home and I had to do quite a bit of prodding to get the boys to wake up.  51 hunters, and only 2 rabbits were taken.  Our small group of hunters ended up seeing 4 different rabbits, but none were harmed, although we gave it heck for 4 straight hours.  There was only 1 inch of snow, and those rabbits could get good footing and move REALLY quick (everybody knows you need a minimum of 3 feet to get them to slow down enough to get a good shot on one LOL).

If you notice in the 1st picture, My little one is wearing a REALLY BIG sweatshirt, well that is because after our 2 1/2 hr drive there, Luke tells me he forgot his jacket, AND it was my responsibility to tell him before we left the house.  What's a dad to do but smile, and give him my sweatshirt. At the conclusion of the hunt, a couple guys took pitty on Luke and loaded him up with some warm clothes for the ride home.  I have a feeling this hat is going to be around for quite a while (quality Elmer Fudd hat=perfect for rabbit hunting)...
