I've never hunting elk with traditional equipment. I have a trip booked for Sept. in New Mexico. Any suggestions on broadheads? I'm thinking stinger or mayby the wasp sharp shooter.   :archer2:    :archer2:

Try a search, many many threads on the subject.

With 54# though arrows tuned proper you can shoot whatever you want to hit em with as long as it is sharp??? course I guess I could be wrong!

No experience with elk so i will go no further.

Oh yeah, GOOD LUCK and post pics!!    :bigsmyl:

Well, I've shot through two elk bulls in new mexico with a Stinger 150 4 blade, with bows right around that same weight. Arrows weighed 620 grains the first time and around 530 grains the second.

Where are you going in NM?  Good luck!

I will also be hunting elk this year with a 54# bow. My personal choice was to go with two blade broadhead. I will be going with a 140 gr. Eclipse. But the Stingers that were suggested are also an excellent choice.

Beach, were hunting on private land in unit 15. From the 10 to the 18. Were hoping to get in on the pre-rut,herd gathering phase with lots of bugling.

cant go wrong with magnus stingers or buzzcuts

54 lb and a wensel woodsman would make a great set up

I would think Stingers would serve you well .

I have however shot 4 Elk, all with STOS broadheads. 56# and 59# longbows 605 and 630 grain arrows. There are a lot of great BH choices out there.

Scary sharp broadhead and Perfect arrow flight are the key.

celticknot

heavy broadhead and light arrow. better flight and lots of punch. I shoot grizzly's, but they can be hard to sharpen if you are sharpening challenged. They are kinda pricy but steel force single bevels are a mean thick razor sharp head from the package.

My last elk was shot with a 53#@27 inch longbow using a Simmons Tiger Shark with insert on a carbon arrow.

Out of the 2 you mention, I'd go with the stinger. 2 or 4 blade.

Many different broadheads will work just fine as long as they're sharp and put in the right place    :readit:

Maybe it's just me but I think there's starting to be too many different broadheads. Bear broadheads worked just fine for Fred, Hill broadheads worked pretty good for Howard. I'm as guilty as the next guy, I guess. A good strong, sharp broadhead in the right place and dead is dead.

Rob DiStefano

i think barney's got it.  well flying arrow of decent gpp weight and a sharp broadhead of most any number of blades and make.

however, i think that perhaps narrower & longer blades might have better overall penetration and initial punch than wider blades, if the bow holding weight is perhaps under 60# or so.  just a guess.

wait thats not what I meant.  All three broadheads killed the elk I shot with them....
I'm  shooting  Woodsman now.  I like them....

If you have any knowledge of penetration and how BH's work, look at a STOS.  Want to be sure to take out two lungs, that will do it.  Longer than any thing mentioned and two blades.

I'm not putting up with this guys shit and dogging me.

Whatever you choose make sure it meets the requirement for broad head width. I don't know what the regulations are in Colorado but double check to be sure. A lot of good broad heads out there just get them sharp and put the sliver in the right place. Good Luck

You cannot go wrong with a stinger.

I like BuzzzzzzzzzzzzzCuts for the presharpend. Otherwise any high quality 2 blade as long as its a black diamond or a magnus or eclipse or Grizzly or. I use Woodsmans but honestly feel like you could use more poundage with a three. However most times the Woodsman would work for you.

LONGSTYKES

I have used Both Grizzlys  and Muzzy Phantoms both at 200gr, arrow total @ 700gr. They both worked well. Put it where it should be and you will be all-right. Good Luck Don

Lot of good heads and advice mentioned already. I've killed elk with the old Magnus 2's and Stingers but any sharp 2 blade will do as long as you get both lungs. Even if you don't get both lungs it still may work, worked for me one time but it took a 5 hours to find the elk and it required a follow up shot.
