I used a 51# bow, 510grn. arrow, and a Magnus II.Worked very well. Best is a very well tuned arrow and very sharp broadhead.

I've taken elk with grizzly, magnus, and a few with WW.  I'm debating this year of going with WW or the Abowyer heads I got for moose last year.

Either will do the job for sure.

I still use bear razor heads although they are getting tougher to find

artelkhunter - You have received much good advice. The business end of the arrow, while extremely significant, is merely one part of the equation for terminal performance. Best of luck in Sept.

Killed an elk with a Woodsman Elite last year with a 55 # longbow. It was pretty dead, too  :)

I have taken 6 elk now with low poundage traditional bows (41-54#).  5 were with Zwickey Eskimos and 1 with a Bear Razorhead.  The Bear didn't hold up very well (blade broke off the ferrel) but still killed the elk.  I went to Zwickeys after that and have never had one fail. The more important part about the arrow is the total weight, IMO.  I like at least 600 gr. for elk.  BTW, the 41# bow (2010)was shooting 630 gr. at only 143 FPS.  I got 20" of penetration!

Im lovin this thread, as im goin elk hunting this year for the first time and im torn between the Ace Express 165gr(i have alot of 'em), and the ever popular STOS in 160gr! Im shooting poundage the same as you +/- 1lb(#55), but im shooting a beefier arrow setup, my arrows are comin in right around 675-680gr finished arrow weight though! I believe the <600gr arrow weight to be very good recommendation for elk and other big stuff!

I shoot 600 grain arrows with bear heads and I have also used the original Journeyman. Complete pass through on three elk with 55 lbs. .........

No doubt, #55 is all i shoot! 10-13gpi, sharp head=Dead Critter! Good luck with whatever head you choose!

I got my first bow killed elk in 2009 with a 55# longbow and a 150 gr. Woodsman Elite and it did a great job. The head buried in the opposite shoulder and the bull was down within 100 yds.

Like others have said, almost any razor sharp broadhead placed in the vitals will do the job.

I try to be open to the ideas and suggestions I read here at Trad Gang. A case in point is Bowmania's post in this thread suggesting STOS broadheads. After reading his post I did a search here for STOS heads and read all I could find. Given my 54# bow, I am now thinking that the the design of the STOS heads might aid in penetration. I'm definately going to check them out.

anithing flying prefectly and sharp wil do the job

i should admit i never see a Elk but if i have one day a chance to hunt one ... (first i should brgin to play lotery ) i will use the broadhead i use for every thing now , El Grande with a something 650 grs EFOC arrow to avoid as much of the bad surprise you can get hunting

One thing a lot of shooters don't get perfect is arrow flight. It can rob a massive amount of penetration from your arrow. Gary

Thats very true, rig up some arrows(heavy preferrably), and then practice with broadheads for tuning! You may have to play with brace height to achieve maximum effectiveness if you are making a change in arrow wood/material as the new shafting will more than likely respond differently than what you shot before! When you reach that sweet spot where the bows quiet and its got plenty of snort you are ready to go!

Jimscol

The  last two that I have killed have been with STOS from a 53# bow.  I got great penetration and short recovery distance.  Neither had great blood trails though.  Jim

Jim, STOS? not  familiar with that abbreviation. thanks Art
