HH BUG GOT ME - Part Three!

I wanted to try a Northern Mist Classic but there wa a long wait and Steve became so swamped he finally stopped taking new orders. So I kept watching his Stock Bows for Sale page, hoping to find a Classic in my draw weight.  Finally, just before Christmas one appeared and I was lucky to buy it.  I can say I am impressed.  It is a smooth shooting, solid performer that shoots well for me.  Burgundy Rosewood Dymondwood handle, bamboo cores and black glass on belly and back.

I recently traded for this NM Shelton with the RW grip. I usually prefer a straight grip but this feels really good so far. It looks like dyed elm veneers but I’m not sure. If it ever quits raining I’d like to shoot it some more and maybe take it on an upcoming pig hunt.

So I'd really like to start on the first part of this discussion and "binge" my way through it all some day.  When I heard that Howard Hill bows was being sold I looked at their in stock page and found a LH "panther".  I can't recall all the wood combos but the riser is birch and the limbs have a rust colored glass.  I really like the bow and am crafting some arrows for it right now.  I have a question though that I can't seem to get answered.  The string that came with it, does anyone know what material Craig used?  There appears to be tip wedges if I'm looking at the right thing.  But the string seems thicker than the low stretch strings I have for my black widow recurve.

Anyway, it seems as though the new owner is taking some time getting things up and running as their website hasn't been updated and I can't reach out to them.

Unless you asked for a low stretch string, Craig usually put dacron -- B 50 or B 55 -- on his bows.  They will easily handle low stretch strings though.  I usually use a 12-strand D-97, padded to 16 strands in the loops, on mine.

Thanks Orion, I am fairly certain it's b-55.  I also reached out to the gentlemen I buy my strings from and he had me check something which is helping me lean more towards Dacron as well.  I appreciate the help.

Evhg127, your trees grow sideways down your way also?   How did you paint the yellow arrow?   I did start a post if “ archery pictures” but is just a general picture post.  I posted this pic before. But no harm again.  My new now…..

Hi David.  Those yellow arrows are Twoforhooking’s famous bamboo specials.  I believe he used a rattle can on them. Whatever finish that the shafts came with is bombproof.  He gave me a couple to play around with and they’re like shooting carbons. 

Speaking of shooting carbons (sacrilege, I know), I got to try some Black Eagle Instincts today. They flew well, but they are so skinny that it threw me off a bit.  I guess it’s a sign for me to stick with cedar!

I’ve been removed from archery since the late 90s until about ten or fifteen years ago.    In the 90s.  I went from cedar shafts, which didn’t hold up when impacting my grandfathers barn, to aluminums when I got my first compound.  But you could bend those expensive aluminums.  No such thing around here as judo points. You lost 50% of the arrows you shot and bent the other 50.   I stuck to targets and hay bales. But it lost much of its appeal.   The old red fibre glass longbow I had before that brought so much joy just flinging arrows at everything.     I remember some guys came moose hunting here and one or two of them had carbon shafts.  They looked so small. So thin.   I remember him telling me “ they were either broke or they’re straight “.   When I got back into it I wanted durability.   I wanted to fling arrows again, but without the restraint or fear of breaking or bending them like I had as a kid.   So I went with carbon.  But I have to say, the whole process of making a nice set of wood arrows is rather appealing lately.

Last few days of rabbit season.  In this pic I’m about 1500 feet. Which is about 1400 above a community a mile or two away .    I have one bad snowshoe but walked up without.  And was headed for the rounded hill in the distance which is about 2000 feet.    Saw one ruffed grouse at lower elevations. One ptarmigan at this elevation and good few snowshoe hare tracks at the lower elevations.
