new to me miller ol' tom, 69", 48@29, myrtle riser.  backset limbs are trapped, handle is a modified hill tear drop that's ever so slightly dished.  shoots stika spruce real nice.  need to build a new string and do some serious surgery on the handle.  a keeper, for sure!  :)

Rob it looks like another way to say sa-weet!!

This waiting thing is tough...lol

I know Nate is somewhere in process but still...sigh!!

Soon I hope my dreams will come true and I'll be flinging arrows out of my Sunset Hill.

Rob!! Don't wreck that handle!!!! Lol

Rob DiStefano

ben - geez, kinda surprised, i like it a lot!  VERY smooth shooter.  hope to get it afield later this week when the rain stops.

matt - so far, the handle doesn't get in the way its inherent stability and accuracy, might just leave it as is.  we "thumb meat pressure" bowhand grip guys can pretty much shoot any handle shape, anyway.   ;)

feels good to be back in the "hill club".   :D

Rob,

I have an EFA and my knuckles hit the arrows when I have it on. How's the clearance on yours? Mine does not have the connect tube between the two pieces. Maybe I need to visit Don and try out a different model.

never had a problem with hand clearance on any of don's bow quivers.

i've got two efa's, a 4 and 5, both are totem's.  i had a few non-totem models and the totem is THE way to go, really makes for a solid integral mount that just won't move and the distance 'tween the hood and gripper has a large adjustment range.  the talon grip velcro mount is very secure and just doesn't move.

pay don a visit!

Rob ,
Given all your experience with AFB's/ semi longs / Hill style bows I was really curious to get ur opinion .
There are lots of things I "want" to be able to nit pick with David's bows , lack of re inforced tips etc but when shooting it just seems to work flawlessly .

The man knows his stuff

One thing I have noticed , and keep in mind that this is just my opinion and certainly not 'scientific' is that my Miler Ol' Tom likes lighter spruce arrows at approx 9-gpp and my Hills prefer 10- 11gpp Doug Firs .

whoa, vulcan mind meld time!  later this afternoon i put a gaggle of different mass weight and spine woodies through the miller and for sure this bow is much happier with 60/65# hildebrand sitka spruce in the 460-500 grain range.

right now i don't see a need to change any of the spex of this miller ...

  • i have no concerns about the plain tips, they're just fine and can easily handle any hmpe string i throw on.
  • with this particular bow, the backset is probably a good thing since it's a medium-ish draw weight (48@29), so i'm glad it wasn't string follow.  if i'd ever order another it'd be a good 55# and then i might go try a string follow.
  • ah yes, that handle shape.  not causing a problem at the moment, but if it does i'll have no problem fixing it poste haste.  :D
cheers mate!  :wavey:

Liberty story:

I have had Liberty since 2006 and it was my first real introduction to Hill style bows. I adapted well to it and soon it became my go to bow when travel allowed it. This past early summer I started working in a remote part of Alaska and to save space I brought a take-down recurve for my shooting and hunting. Some time in June I went home on days off and discovered that my son had been shooting Liberty and instead of hanging it in it's usual resting spot, he unstrung it, cased it and laid it on my arrow bench. I didn't think that was a problem but when I looked closer, I found rip and chew marks through the case. I knew right away what had happened and as I slowly peeled the case away it became clear my favorite bow was ruined. My wife owns a Schnauzer and it climbed on the bench, sorted through all the arrows, etc. picked out Liberty and chewed part of the limb and nock off!(Molly the Schnauzer, hates me) To shorten the story, the Schnauzer escaped with her life but I was sure Liberty would never launch another arrow. I was sick and later in the summer I was telling Nate the story, then in between giggles, he told me to send it to him because he thought he could fix it. Not long after, Nate says he could fix it! Last week Liberty came home and I can tell you it is a work of art. It's 63", three inches shorter than original and 57#@27". I now own a bunch of Hill Style bows and even at a shorter length the new Liberty is a better fit for me than any of the others. Nate adjusted the handle and rest, and added some distinctive artwork making the new Liberty my go to bow once again. Sunset Hill bows really do have all the positive shooting attributes I'm looking for in a bow and I'm sure proud to own this one.........again.......!

PS. I know where you can get a Schnauzer hide any time you want. Just let me know    :)

Dave K , Cool story , and even cooler  drawing on the bow ! Nate's a good bloke . Doesn't make a bad bow either by all accounts ... lol

I'm thinking the 2012 Aussie Hill style bowmen invasion of Idaho will show the Steen's , the Hinton's and any and other all comers that the roving fields and stumps that inhabit them are no place for ya'll when we lads from Down under get there .
And my bow should be ready by then, shouldn't it Nate ?     :goldtooth:

That is truly a *handsome* Sunset Hill Dave!

Better put some schnauzer repellant on it -  don't think you want to get any shorter than 63" for a Hill style....

after the talk of shooting indoors I thought you guys might get a kick out of this pic. Shortly after this pic was taken my wife forced me to buy a new block target. Apparently the crappy foam one isn't designed for a 630 grain arrow. (coincidentally neither is the door)

Fireball, That is great. In 1991 after getting out of the U.S.Navy I went to Ferris State University. My cousin and I went looking for an apartment to rent and when we came to the one "I" wanted, I was pacing off from the door to the far wall. It looked alot like your pic.
I counted to 22 and tuned around thinking about how cool it would be to have an indoor range. My cousin blurts out, "Hey! what are you doing? pacing for your bow target?" I gave a sly grin. The lady would not rent us the apartment.
I was very panic sticken back then as I had grown up in the country and could shoot anything at anytime,so the thought of not being able to shoot at will was very distubing to me.
That picture brought back some memories. Thanks.

Nate Steen .

Aw Dave....I only shortened Liberty by an inch...didn't want to get too short for a "long"bow... ;)

Mr Maher,  When you blokes think you can come and show Mr. Hinton and myself how to shoot in our own backyard,  that my boy will be the day...  :biglaugh:  maybe there'll have to be a dozen of Ray's hand-crafted woodies riding on that one for sure.  You don't think I've watched Mr. Schulz's instructions 100 times for nothing do you?  I love shooting with Rik...it's usually neck and neck

Mr. Maher, I've told you many times...if you can ever make it to Idaho, there'll be a reward for your pains... ;)

Rik

Now that is just plain unfair. The last time I shot with Nate was when I picked up the Sunset Hill he made for my one-month hunting trip to Australia. I showed up at Nate's house with a quiver of blunt rabbit arrows, but they were not perfect for the bow, and thus I had to aim 10 inches to the left at 30 yards when we went out rabbit and stump shooting that afternoon.

NOW I have arrows that fly like laser beams from the Sunset Hill (on which Nate wrote "Gone Outback"). So, the neck and neck thing may just change on our next outing. Heh heh heh.

Aussies?

Stump shooting in Idaho?

The last time I saw that was the World Championship Stump Shooting Finals a few years back, which lasted 23 days during September (uh, we chased a few elk in our downtimes) and it pitted noted Queenslanders Billy Baker and Brad Kane against Doug Chase and myself.

At the conclusion of the 23-day competition, the Aussies were ahead, but Doug and I still strongly suspect foul play and dark dealings by the Aussie lads.

We will need to keep a sharp eye on any Aussies coming over for the Next World Championship Stump Shoot-----we won't be putting up with any Larrikan shenanigans like last time!
