I have been shooting only BH in prep for the coming deer season.  I really like the way the new Tuffhead is flying on these Sika Spruce shafts.  They are one tough head!  I have been shooting into a sand/clay bank and have just knocked the edge off.  Some other BH I would have already destroyed from the abuse.  I weighed them and they have about a 5 grain range.  I spined them on Stus calculator as a 235 grain BH for the extra length and my arrows are flying really well. The BH were expensive, but I believe they are an investment, looks like they are going to last a long time. Have not shot a critter yet, we will see.

That's one heavy broadhead, what's the total arrow weight?

576 grain total arrow weight.  Really wish the shaft was a touch heavier.  I think this head would shoot great on the Fir shafts.

OK, they are re-posted.

Those are some great looking bows and arrows! I fletched a dozen arrows last night and made my new string (turned out even better than the first.) Nocks were still slightly tight so I used the search feature here and got them tuned in to where they will just barely hang on the string. Ready for range day tomorrow!!!

As I was getting my loops measured up and tied I realized I don't have tip overlays on this bow. There is a gold shim between the center lams at both ends, would that be something that would make it FF friendly? If not do I need to go kill a pig so I have some teeth to have glued up on here? I can post some pics if they would help, BC704153 is my serial number.

Thom:

I believe you are describing a tip wedge. I use FF on bows with a tip wedge and have never had any problems.

Thanks JCJ! With "Hill tip wedge" in my search all of my questions about that are answered. Good thing I don't really need a reason to look forward to pig hunting!

That's what we like to see!  pretty bows and backquivers full of arrows ready for hunting!

great lookin' bow Eric...shoot it with pride. and the quiver looks good too... :)

Well,  I was tinkering this weekend because I haven't been super happy with my arrow flight lately.  The arrows haven't been flying exactly where I've been looking, but off the the right a little...like being underspined.  I was shooting 70-74#, cutting 1" off so they were 75-79# with 150 gr heads.  but I've been shooting with fastflight lately and I like the feel, but something hasn't been right.  sooo......

Off came the fastflite, on went the b-50 and lighter Zwickey's on the front end of a 75-79# cut down 1" to 80-84# spine.....result?  deadly accuracy right where I'm looking out to 45 yards (I'll test them farther later)  I guess I've made things too complicated (and I like simplicity)  so now...look out animals! deadeye dick is back!  :archer2:

i hear what yer sayin', nate, and understand the results ya got and why.  however, to me that's like the dog waggin' the tail.  going back to dacron is not a option for me, too many consistency benefits from hmpe and i'll up the shaft spine considerably before givin' up the dyneema.  to each their own ...

you're right Rob....I love the feel of fastflight....but I've got 100's and 100's of shafts that I'd like to use....   and I don't want to retrain my eye/hand coordination...if you know what I mean....

gotcha and agree!

hmmm - have you tried a very low count hempe string?

a few years back I tried about 8 or 10 strands with padded loops...I didn't like the vibration and I had to add silencers which I really dislike.  The string noise turned into a little thump which was quiet, but I didn't like the feel....

try an endless string, dyneema'97, padded loops that are nylon #4 served, and an appropriate halo spectra diameter for the center serving.

do you use silencers Rob?  what kind?  I haven't used an endless string since about 1988 or 89

Brand new eyes, Ol School B-50, Zwickeys.  The critters in Idaho better be hiding behind the trees to aviod the Sunset Hill longbowman!

Nate,

How many strands you got in your B-50 string?

"but I've got 100's and 100's of shafts that I'd like to use"

When Nate says hundreds, he ain't kidding!    :archer2:

He and I went on an afternoon hunt Friday, along the rimrocks and benches.  Pretty steep climb up - shot blunts at various yardages at sagebrush, etc. on the way up.  In this country, it is best to practice uphill / downhill shooting.  We came out in the dark by moonlight.  Two does seen but no shots.  Saw a big covey of quail, a coyote, some vultures and a 3' black (racer maybe) snake.  On the way out, Nate says, "steer clear - go over there!"  There was a buzz tail going in the waist deep sage and it was already dark.  At least we had some moon light to see a bit.

I took some photos with my phone.  They are a little grainy but I will post after I get home from work.  Someone a few pages back requested more pics but I think they were referring to elk hunting.  Mule deer, antelope, black bears, mountain lions, elk and small game are open.  So when we get the opportunity between work obligations, we go for whatever will do.
