Well I made my annual trip to Texas in the South Texas brush country. This year was not very favorable to me, the first 7 days the moon and weather had the deer locked down, during that 7 days I saw a total of 3 deer, a doe and her two fawns, three times. I did see a buck but he was not a shooter. The weather got right two days before I left but no bucks yet only about 10 does, now I could have shot a doe, but was waiting on a big boy I knew was around, had seen his tracks and droppings, so did not take a shot at any of the does, probably should have but you know how it is.

I did shoot a jake turkey with a 2 inch beard, but a poor decision on my part resulted in the loss of him to the yotes. It was just about prime time and I marked where he went and decided to let him lay until dark, bad move, all I found was a pile of feathers.

I killed a javalina on my last day, but had to get on the road after tracking him for about an hour through the thick brush. My friend found him after I left and is going to have a skull mount done for me.

My friend had a young man there helping him and I was very impressed with him. He has been hunting with my friend for about 10 or 12 years. The young man was born with cystic fibrosis and has overcome a bunch for such a young man. He used to shoot wheels and was a national bare bow champion with it a few years ago shooting fingers. He is now eat up with traditional archery.

I made him the gift of a Timber Ghost bow that I had because I was so impressed with his character.
He blooded it on a Jake Turkey the day after I left. I will post some pictures in a bit.

It was a blast, next year I am going in December so I can hit the rut and hopefully connect with a good buck.

Super cool Danny! Look at that young man smile. Great job and sorry your hunt wasn't better. Your success on that trip is measured by what you left behind and not by what you have taken away.

Thanks TJ, now the hunt and fellowship with my friend was wonderful as always, cannot predict weather and normally I do not worry about moon phases too much, have killed a bunch of animals on a full moon. But when it is warm and raining every day, it will lock them down in that part of Texas. Any time in the field hunting refreshes my soul, kill or no kill. It is something I need and am blessed that I can do it.

Wow - that's amazing.  Good for you Danny!  Our best friends have a 6 year old daughter with CF and it's no joke.  What you did was flat out generous and while you applauded his character, I applaud yours.     :clapper:

Sorry you did not get any deer, Danny, but it still sounds like you had a great time, and that is what really counts! I did the same thing as you on a big doe a couple years ago. I left her lie so my buddy could let his dog track it down. The yotes got there before we did and I lost one of the shoulders!

Congrats to the young man on the turkey!

Wish you could have connected on a buck, but that's awesome that you did that for the young man. Sounds like a great trip anyway.

You're a class act Danny, I'm sure the young man will enjoy his gift

Glad you could help the young man out!  Looks like it was a successful trip to me!

Bummer you didn't see more game.  Great Gesture on your part to that young Man.  I bet you couldn't wipe that smile off his face with sandpaper.

Looks like he is settling into that new bow well!
Relax,
