The "D" Dilemma

For years if wanted to try a D style longbow. Shot a Hill style bow once about twenty years ago and all I can say was "ouch"! Being a recurve guy my first and only shot with a loose recurve grip resulted in a major welt on my forearm and a real good hammer in my shoulder. Not for me

Fast forward to a couple of months ago, a Toelke Super D popped up in the classifieds at the right price in the perfect weight for my 30" draw. 66" with Osage limbs and a beavertail wrapped Macassar Ebony riser. I've killed a ton of critters with Dan's bows in the past. His Whip is a superb bow and his Curlews are one of my all time favorite takedown recurves. The Curlew is probably one of the most under rated takedown recurves out there IMHO.
Put a few arrows through it at 12 yards on my basement range while the snow was still flying and put it down. The weather has finally turned and winter is a thing of the past. Caught up on my honey do list and at last got outside to launch a few arrows. This thing took a little while to figure out but after a few days it throws them in there without having to think about it. I just have to remember to grip it tight and crook my bow arm slightly. Five arrows at 20 yards, bare shafts a 31" GT 3555 with 175 up front perfectly and throws fletched shafts in a tiny little ball. Now I have to figure out how I'm going to shoot this thing out of my Double Bull at turkey's over the next month!

Trust me Mike, you gotta cut the top out of the blind. Or at least have the turkey downhill ..... :D

There is a turkey that is alive today because of slapping my bow tip on a blind this morning. I may revert to a ghillie, or just spot and stalk. Blinds are a pain for longbow shooters.
It appears that your bow might agree with you, if that target is any indication. Have fun!

I enjoy shooting my "new" to me Super D also. Looks like your shooting great with it! I'll shoot a nice tight group and then the next will he all over the target. That being said, I keep coming back to it, so much fun and such a joy to shoot! Looking forward to your harvest pics with it!

Great looking bow and great shooting! Coming from recurves and R/D bows the one thing that took me a while to figure out was to ditch everything I thought I knew. The 4 John Schulz videos on youtube helped a lot for consistancy in my shooting. As for the blind.. Eh, ASLs were meant to breath! Haha either way, glad you're getting along with it!

You might try the Hidden Hunter Ron sells, those are pretty tall.

I forgot to mention, I have the Hidden Hunter 6x6 and I shoot my 62" Super D with no problem. That's the longest bow I have or I would try one longer and give you a report. I really can't see you having any problems shooting out of a 6x6 HH though.

Nice group. You don't have to grip the bow tightly though. You got your welt years ago because the brace height was too low, or you shot with too straight a bow arm, and/or too closed a stance.

If you grip it gently, I think you will find it behaves even better, transmitting even less shock to your hand. Difficult to improve on that accuracy though.

Funny this should come up! Recently one of the 2pc. Super D's came up on the classifieds and I just had to get my paws on it. I have to give it a thumbs up also. Very comfortable fun to shoot little bow. And it barely makes a sound when the arrow is released. I'm not kidding. It barely makes a sound. I don't shoot mine as well as you shoot yours. But I'm sure gonna try. The hand shock compared to most D shaped bows is very very mild.

Awesome shooting!
Are you shooting split or 3 under? What's your nock height on your super d, just curious. I've never got a dart for a bare shaft.

I hold mine loosely arm slightly bent with the force of the bow mid palm to wrist on the bow hand. 6 5/8 brace shooting in a t shirt with no arm slap.
