Hunting to Stumping

So, me and my dad have gone out turkey hunting the past couple of mornings (even though we're not very good at it     ). The birds weren't talking back and it was turning into a boring hunt so we started doing some stump shooting instead. We never have actually got around to doing any stump shooting since we live in town, but I got to say it was just as much fun as hunting itself! How many of you guys will turn a day of boring and unproductive hunting into a fun stump shooting session?

I went out the other day and had a real fun day doing it. Down here in South Texas I leave the stumps alone though,they are all hard as a rock. I would shoot at a cactus,ant hills,and any other natural target that wouldn't screw up my arrows.

Stumping is great.  I particularly like it when scouting, it forces you to slow down and take notice of things you may otherwise miss.  I don't know how many times I have been retrieving an arrow, only to look up and discover a scrape or rub, or a shed.  Glad you had fun.  Stumping is one more great way to spend time in the woods.

I had an Old timmer tell me once, That if ya want to see more animals don't hunt, just walk around.
   Seams animals know when your in the Hunt mode....
   And yes Stumping is a lot of fun, And if pick animal patties to shoot at, Make sure they are dry all the way thru....

Stumpin is a lot of fun. Another skill to learn however is to determine by sight if said stump is indeed rotten or hard as an axle shaft. Ive dug out too many with a knife. I go and check the innocent looking stump first..haha.

Yeah we didn't actually shoot stumps, I was just using the term to just mean shooting natural targets mainly. We about shot a couple stumps but we weren't sure how hard they were. Yesterday we ended up in a disked up field shooting big dirt clods, it was actually pretty fun watching those dirt clods explode when shot! Now if only we could learn how to locate and get us some turkeys. I was set up with a couple decoys near a roost and I had them gobbling right before shooting hours, but couldn't get them to come in and then couldn't even get them to answer back or find them later in the day

Bulldog42, you hit the great time part without even saying it. Any time spent with family and great friends is time well spent.    

I am with Mr Alexander, cactus shooting is a hoot... At the ranch, we have a "special" arrow that is about 6" long that has a lighted nock on one end and a field point on the other. At night we turn the lighted nock "special" arrow on and stick it in a cactus at crazy distances, then break out the Judo tipped arrows. We always have as much fun at camp as we do actually hunting.

I like to stump shoot, & will shoot at a couple each time I go out just to get focused & muscles limbered up. I don't do it when actually hunting though. If it's really boring & haven't seen anything I'll break down & shoot at targets of opportunity. ALWAYS carry at least one blunt.

Most of my Turkey hunts turn into a stump shoot at some point! And it is fun!!

Did some stump shooting yesterday with a good friend while checking out some new property  it was a blast!!! Except for the ticks, we put a hurtin on some stumps

I have yet to go into the woods with a bow and not shoot a stump or two. It's too much fun not to.

My good friend and I try to go stump shooting every time we get a chance, I think its the best practice there is for hunting and it is a blast.

I have more fun stumping than actually hunting.  Certainly, I shoot more that way.  I also get to take stupid, ridiculous shots without worry of hurting a critter.

I enjoy stumping a lot. I never quit hunting to go stumping per se. However, sometimes when I get finished hunting I will taker a few shots as I leave the woods

I really enjoy stump shooting and do it constantly in the off season. I fight the temptation to do it when hunting turkey/deer. I've shot too many over the years just as I was about to pack it in.
