3-under vs. split-finger

Hey all,
 I traded my way into a Palmer Carbon TD and when I looked at the 'site, it seems they tiller for 3-under. I've never shot that way, always split. Any idea if I'm going to be able to tune this in for split-finger, or should I trade it for something I'll be able to shoot? I really don't want to change my shooting style, if possible.

Was your bow specifically tillered that way?I don't beleive Palmer tillers all his bows three under.Also just because a bowyer does in fact tiller for three under doesn't necesarialy mean the bow was made that way.Did you try shooting it? Shoot the bow split fingers and see what happens. Let me know how she shoots. I shoot three under and there are some bowyers who don't tiller that way. Usually I just raise the nocking point and she shoots fine.

according to an excellent and experienced bowyer...you can shoot split or 3under, regardless of tiller. it will not hurt the bow but you may need to adjust nock height and play w/ the brace for the best tune, etc.....

md126 is right.  I shoot three under, but have a number of bows tillered split.  I've never had any problems with the bows regardless of tiller.  As was already mentioned, you'll probably just need to raise the nock point.

Take it out in the yard and see if it shoots split fingers. If it does then your fine, if not ge rid of it.

Let the bow tell ya, not some body else.

I shoot 3under, it puts the arrow closer to my eye, for me its an easier way to aim

I have heard that is true and I think that it would be easier for someone starting out to shoot three under, they would put arrows on target sooner. I have always shot split from way back in my wheelie days, so when I picked up a curve I stayed split.

Three under is easier for a beginner. It is usually noisier though. I don't know how much practical difference in makes. I have been shooting split this year because it is quieter and I think I have better control (not necessarily accuracy, I just feel in control of the arrow). Also, I am using a recurve this year, so I need all the help I can get with quiet.  

Apparently the deer I shot last year shooting three under with my longbow couldn't tell the difference though.    :rolleyes:

Thanks. I should get the bow in today, and I'll give it a try. Like 30coupe, I like the control of the arrow with shooting split, and really don't want to be changing this close to season.

Follow up question for the bowyers among us: Can, and should, the bow be re-tillered for split, if I like it and decide not to trade it off?

I have a Silvertip that is supposed to be tillered for three under, but I shoot it one over and two under just fine. Shoots where I look. Terrific shooting bow and I wouldn't change a thing.

Thats what it is I like the control of it, shooting split. Plus like I said I have a hard time changing what ain't broke.

Straitshot, I should have my new silvertip shortly!! I am dying for it to get here.

Well, I picked up the Palmer from the P.O. this morning, and shot it a bit. I know my arrows aren't spined for it (50-55# 28.5" BOP) and the bow is 58#@28", with me drawing just under 27", but it shoots good. I tried split and 3 under, and the only difference I  can see is that I impact 4" low when shooting 3 under, from 10yds. I'll get to shoot it some more after work this week, and I'll post if I have any issues, but it seems that I have little to worry about.

BTW, this thing will SMOKE an arrow, compared to my longbow.

If you're not careful, the Palmer will smoke an arrow from both ends.  What you may eventually have to do once you get arrows that are better matched to the draw weight is drop the nock point maybe 1/4".  Best of luck to you!

i wouldn't have it re-tillered if it shoots well and you're happy w/ the set-up.
