I took a walk this morning on a new piece of land and had no idea where I was going. Found some good trails though.

DEATHMASTER

I got invited to a some private ground with public bordering the backside this morning. I have never been there but it looked good and had about everything a deer/hunter could ask for.

The south wind this morning wasn't really great for this spot but I came up with a plan and started walking. Thick is an understatement for this place. I was beginning to think I wasn't going to find anything I could see more than five feet but it soon opened up a bit.

I had made it to the public and found a small oak flat with good sign...

After about 3 hours of taking in a perfect October morning I caught movement in front of me. Two large doe skirted about 30yrds out of range. I debated moving down a little for awhile but decided to sit tight.

45 min or so went by and I was really starting to second guess my decision making process for this whole season.

Just then to my right a flash of movement! It's a deer and close. Its a buck! He stops broadside at about 10 yrds but is giving me that look away kinda I saw something move stare. He moves but starts to quarter hard and away. This needs to happen now! Green light. Arrow is away and hits good but what looks to be low and forward. It stays in as I watch him and pink fletch disappear down the hill.

I give him some time then decide to take a look at first blood. Its bubbly and heavy. The tree shark had done its job and about 30 yrds later I find the arrow. Good blood, intact, and what looked to be good penetration.

I took up the trail but it got longer and longer. Still good bubbly blood but what was looking like a single lung. I was about to turn back and give him time when I jumped him up at the base of a steep ravine. He ran almost to the top but stopped and sat down. I watched and knew it wouldn't be long. I wanted to get another arrow in him but everything was so thick I thought better of it.

I watched for what seemed like forever. He finally got up made about 3 steps and went down. Silence. After a tense stalk up the hill this is what I found.

Bears can attack people- although fewer people have been killed by bears than in all WWI and WWII combined.

I have to add that the broadhead was the same one Owlbait gave for my month with the St. Judes bow last year. He had killed deer with it, I killed deer with it then and it seems to still have some mojo.
