Today, I ordered my first Leon Stewart longbow. It's 64" 50@28, LS R/D longbow.

Leon and I discussed the choices of wood and here is what we decided: The back will be Curly Teak. The belly will be Yew. Cores will be Birdseye Maple and the riser will be Brazilian Rosewood with a dark brown leather grip.

I'm as excited as an 8 year old on Christmas Eve. The seven month wait will be well worth it. I've heard great things about Stewart bows and I'm sure I will not be disappointed. BTW: Leon has been great to work with, but you all know that!

Big Ed

You will not be disappointed! Leon and his bows are top notch!!

Thanks, AT. Did I understand him correctly about Curly Cheek? I'm not familiar with that wood.

I googled it and nothing came up under that name.   :dunno:

Agreed. Leon is the man and I have the pleasure of being friends with him. I have owned/own many of his longbows over the years. I have another one on order that is due in March. You will really like that bow.

YEAH!!!!  Leon is a true master and his bows are the sweetest shooting I have encountered.  My 3pc is my bow-wife and my #1.  Your new one sounds AWESOME.  I just ordered another from him last week myself!  A 56" Lil' Slammer, wenge riser, carpathian elm veneers and sheephorn tips.  Also about 6-7 months away!  Painful but WELL worth the wait.  You're gonna love the maple cores!  Very nice feel on the shot and very smooth.  What blows me away about Leon is how modest he is.  We all know he makes some awesome shooting bows but talking to him you know he just wants to make his customers happy and that he loves what he does, not a glory seeker, just a hunter, a bowyer, and a good guy!

Awesome Ron and Nine. Please post picks when your bows come in! I think I miss heard Leon. I think he may have said Curly Check wood. Googled it and I like what I see. I've always had boo cores, so I'm glad to hear the positive reply to his maple cores. He is very humble and easy to talk to. Just an extremely talented, down to earth man!

I missed out on 4dogs beautiful Slammer, so I went with Plan B!

You bet I will post em!  I laughed when I told him my new bow's desired specs..he listened and very relaxed said "Hmm.  That's gonna be a good lookin' bow."  Haha I love it!

Yes the maple was a delight to shoot.  I think the boo has some more snap to it, but the maple doesn't give anything in speed.  It's very stable and feels very solid. That "curly check" sounds very intriguing, post a pic of some if you find one.

I actually had Leon build me a few bows with Yew core wood sandwiched between bamboo lams. Best shooting bow I have ever owned. All my bows from Leon now come with this configuration.

I've had my LS r/d longbow for about 15 yrs now, it will be the last bow I ever sell. Solid yew limb cores, cocobolo riser. Very pretty, very fast, very quiet...........top notch bow from a top notch bowyer.....
Bowhunting is "KILL and EAT" not "Catch and Release".....Semper Fi!

The limb backs will be curly teak. This should be a nice combo. Can't wait to see it!

Ron Vought

The curly teak will be very nice on the limbs. Bet you are counting the months now..LOL!

I have Leon building me another 64" Slammer starting in January. Bocote/Ebony flared riser. Core wood will be yew sandwiched between layers of bamboo. Limbs veneer wood and wood inlays are solely up to Leon. Bighorn sheep tips. I have let Leon build me bows without even suggesting wood variations and they come out better than expected. Should be another good one.

Thanks,
Ron
