From all I've heard, if you are home (where your "from:" says), the trail job will be easy.  Follow the furrow in the snow. . .  man you guys got a ton.

Good luck

So, as ChuckC stated we got hammered last weekend with 30 plus inches of snow.  One of the worst blizzards I have been a part of living in SD for some 46 years.

Clean up is still ongoing and some residents are still without power.  Many buildings were damaged and roofs could not handle it.  Thousands upon thousands of trees are damaged.

But my son wanted to go hunting.  We had a ground blind set up by some apples trees and the deer had to be hungry.  So out we go.

Right about sunset a doe with two fawns comes in snooping around the apples on the ground.  And soon after, a small 4x4 buck appears out of no where.

Cade immediately starts preparing for a shot, getting shifted into position, getting an arrow nocked, and putting tension on the string.

The buck comes in with food obviously on his mind and goes right to the apple trees, but stops at a green patch of grass the size of a bathtub.

He was in a bad position, facing us.  He is all of 7 yards away and absolutely relaxed.  It doesn't take long for him turn and reposition to broadside while browsing the still green grass.

Cade comes to full draw.......

More tomorrow.

At the shot, the arrow flies true an completely disappears into the buck.  He spins an whirls, but only makes it a couple jumps before he slows immediately.

Complete pass thru, buck slowly walking, we can see blood coming out both sides.  Appears to be a pocket perfect heart shot.

The buck beds down within sight, we are just waiting for the head to drop.  I have seen this numerous times. Deer has no idea you are there and you slip a razor sharp broadhead through them and they do not know what happened.  Stay quiet and concealed and the recovery is easy.

After 15 minutes the buck get's back on his feet.  Uh Oh, this is not good.  Really struggles getting to his feet, mouth open, labored breathing and heads toward the canyon.  Goes over the lip and we hear what we think is a crash and sliding into trees over the edge.  Takes everything we have to not go out and look.  But we wait.........

Got to go to work.  More later

Gotta love these cliffhanger stories...    :campfire:

OK, got finished with work and the youngest son wanted to go out hunting.  Just got back.  But that is a St Judes auction story to follow after the conclusion of this one.

The bloody arrow.

The only thing is, the arrow was not that bloody and when I smelled it, it smelled of paunch.
But we had both seen the blood coming out of both sides, so on we went.  Immediately found blood and after 30 yards found this.

Nice dual blood trail coming out both sides.  We got to where the buck had bedded and there was blood all over.  Kicker was the blood trail decreased dramatically after he had got up and walked to the edge of the canyon.

We thought he had gone down in the canyon, but he had turned and started down the edge right on top but we could not see him for the trees that were in the way.

The snow made it easy to follow tracks and there was still plenty of blood, just not a blind man blood trail.  We continued on  and had probably gone 175 yards when the trail finally took a turn into the canyon.

We followed it into the canyon and about 30 yards down we found where he had fallen and slid until a small tree stopped him 20 yards further down.

So it was a pretty cool evening, getting to watch my son arrow his 4th traditional deer and 2nd buck.
