i have been using shield cut 5" feathers and have noticed some noise with the arrows. do you find that shields make more noise than other cuts. was thing of tring some 5.5" parobolic or banana cut sice it was almost time to buy some new feathers.

BigRonHuntAlot

Shield cuts can make more noise but usually it is a High Shield or extreme helical that I have noticed the noise...or unless the feather has some damage and then it can really be heard. Parabolic is more quiet but I like the broadhead stabilizing factors that the shield offers.

Nanners are usually the noisiest in my opinion and parabolics are the quietest. I like regular 5" shields as I think ya get the best of the other two mentioned, pretty quiet and stabilize almost as well as Nanners. Shawn

How high are the shields? I cut mine to 1/2" above the quill at the highest point.

No such thing as a silent arrow. Parabolic are quieter, but they still make noise.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Goodbye Shiner you were always a good dog.

Is there alot of difference I never tried shield

ncboman

I don't use shields because of the noise.

I like the way they look though.   :)

I just made up a batch for a friend, using a 5" left helical on 1916 shafts. Flew quickly and silently. I use a feather burner so I can get any height and shape. I prefer shields, and cut them as low as I figure I can get away with. Straight offset works well too. I think a helical stabilizes a broadhead faster, though.

I bought off the shelf 5" shield feathers and fletched a few aluminum arrows. I'm not a hunter so noise is not a problem, but I do hear a kind of hiss from them. Flints

I've never had feather noise make a difference while hunting.

High Nanners stabilize better than shields, proven fact, but are noisy. I agree with Jerry though, it will not make a difference to the game, they will hear the bow at release long before feather noise. Shawn

Ever notice old fletches are quieter??
They don't have that sharp edge from the cut. Take some sandpaper and feather the edge slightly and they become quieter.
The owl has his like this too.

Pete W brought up a good point point.  I thought about it a while did some shooting and I think he is 100% correct.
