Anyone shoot a Hill style bow without the leather grip? Seems like I haven't seen any in plain wood. Does it make any noticeable difference?

Orion

Bare wood can get pretty slippery.

Occasionally I see a picture of one posted here.  They just look a little odd.  If you have pretty wood it's kind of a shame to cover it up.  I have thought my next hill bow I might skip the leather and have the grip checkered with 30 lpi.

I have seen a couple with no leather grip, looked nice but like said bare wood can get slippery.I prefer a leather grip on my longbows.

Yeah I'd want it at least checkered.  I tried a Martin Stick with no grip once, talk about even less consistent hand placement.  You should have something on there for traction.  Now a bare locator grip might work ok.

I couldn't help myself. I took the leather wrap off today. My other bows are all wood, and I'm just used to the feel. This  bow has a slight dish so hand placement isn't an issue. I also did some tinkering with the string and strike plate. Very happy camper right now.

Jeff - could you snap us a pic of that Super D without the leather please?

On my Hill bows I really like having the leather grips, on the D/R bows I've owned in the past, I like them just bare wood.   :dunno:

Although not a hill bow, me Ed Scott longbow has a painted raw hide grip.  It is beautiful to look at, but I find it slippery, so I have since put a leather wrap on they handle.

Never tried one, but the leather bow saddle that 3rivers sells might be a good compromise of a little traction and bare.
