I bet someone shot the bird standing next to him and he caught that one pellet!

Dinner looks awesome!

Great story - thanks for posting - maybe it'll be my turn next week - M

Way to go Don! Your story might just motivate me enough to get out after a bird myself....I kinda lost interest after the first week for some reason...
It's hard to believe you missed 7 birds as good as you shoot..lol....but you and I both know shooting a target and shooting game just ain't the same....even though I'm shooting targets better than I have in years, last year I had one of those years where I couldn't do anything right on shooting a deer so I know how it can go..congratulations again good buddy...

Great job Don and great story, several times I wished I had a dog that could find a bird.LCH

A pleasure to read. I don't know how many times you could have gone back and not found that bird..... but it just proves that you never will if you don't try.

Cory Mattson

Good job Don - dinner looks great too!!! Hey Wally I heard a gobbler yesterday afternoon when I was scouting gamelands - the only reason I did not give chase is a hunter entered before I got there and he could have been working the bird - 4 gobbles over 20 minutes never heard a shot so I will try him Tuesday AM - I am seeing lots of sign and lots of birds this year - get out there buddy  :)

Great writeup Don!  The turks seem to have my number this year but I sure enjoyed reading about your bird from start to finish, gives me hope!

Thanks guys.

Lee, It was a McCormick rub called Sweet and Smoky. Also did a light 2 hr marinade of soy sauce. This was suggested by Cory to pull and hold the smoke flavor . It worked. Was really good. Be careful not to over cook. I went to 155 internal temp and was gonna let it rest to 170 but got side tracked and it was almost over cooked.

"Chow" looks like a good line to be in, buddy, know you enjoyed it all the more, for the great hunt behind it. You deserved it, especially after all the times you have put folks onto a bird, instead of hunting yourself.

Our dove season open on Labor Day monday. the sunday 8 days before, Chip passed away. Was heart broken but he had got in pretty bad shape as of late.  This is my new companion. Doc Holiday.  He's four months old now and a Boykin Spaniel. I wanted a smaller dog this time around. Don't go for the big water ducks much anymore. Anyway he is coming along very nice in his training.  Also been doing a little blood trailing work. He's found two deer so far. Now bear in mind that these were slam dunk double lung shots from the same old no sale widow in the story. I  heard both deer fall but didn't even look till I went back to the house and got Doc. He could have done no better on each trail. Gave him a small pc of liver as reward. I think he will be in future post on here.

Don,

Boykins are special dogs.  I've had them since childhood and admittedly haven't done the blood trail work with them that I should.  Whip got one down here last year and I believe has had good success with blood trailing.  If this is your first one, feel free to give me a holler.  They are very different than labs if you haven't figured that out yet.

Good stuff.

What a great story on the turkey hunt. Sorry about Chip passing. I know a lot of folks on here can relate to losing a good dog. Good luck with Doc.

My Lab, Rainy, found a bow-shot turkey for me a couple of years ago, and our beagle pup is going to help if needed on a trailing job. Dogs are invaluable for finding turkeys that don't leave much of a blood trail. Nice story and congrats on a fine tom.

DEATHMASTER

Doc looks like a great pup. Hard to loose a family member but, glad you found another to help with the void. Looks like a smart pup. I wanted a Boykin but hard to find without giving up a arm for one or signing 20 legal papers about them.
Look forward to seeing more of him.
