Overspined

The limbs are no longer in sync with 3 under.

njloco

I think, unless it's been tillered for 3 under, then it's what Overspined said.

  • Gordy Morey 2pc. 68" R/D 55# @ 28"
  • Hoyt Pro Medalist, 70" 42# @ 28" (1963)
  • Bear Tamerlane 66" 30# @ 28" (1966)- for my better half
  • Bear Kodiak 60" 47# @ 28"(1965)

I think it is all geometry. Look at the angle produced by the nocked arrow, which is basically the centerline of that angle. To keep the shot smooth you need equal force above and below centerline. Split is much closer to equal force than three under. I played with this also and have shot split for many years. Much more accurate for me also.

Did you make a adjustment to your nock point. When you go to 3 under you will need to raise the nock set. This will not only help with arrow tune but will quite the bow.

Brazos

Either raise the nock or get a bow that is tillered 3 under.

BenBow

I've played with bows that have adjustable tiller and nothing quiets 3 under. Based on high speed videos I'm more of the opinion that with three fingers under the arrow the string gets pulled back behind The arrow. At release the string snaps forward before it starts moving the arrow which causes the added noise. IMHO
But his bow will remain steady, and his hands will be skillful; because of the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,  (Genesis 49:24 [NETfree])

3 under is louder. Even my bows tillered for 3 under are louder then if using Split.
There is more to the Hunt.. then the Horns

If properly tuned, tillered for 3under and shot with good release form, it isnt louder.
my experience.

Bows are tillered for 3 under (from bowyer), nock points have been raised and form can't be too bad cause it is quiet with splits - right?  Very noticeable difference with most bows.

Anyone do anything to solve this?  Shoot off self versus rest? Diff rest material?

Shot 3 under for years,

I found the ONLY way to make a true difference in sound is to adjust the amount of finger meat on the string. If you use a deep hook w/ 3 under???You'll most certainly should work on reducing the amount of finger play into the release.Try moving the string towards the tips of your finger w/out putting extra tension on the hand.

I will say,

Once I worked on shooting split.I would never go back to 3 under, for many reasons outside of noise issue.

Bowwild

I have no idea why the difference except that 3-under vs. split is a different "strum" of your string. I would think shooting from an elevated rest might help because you'd be moving your fingers back up the string.

I shoot some of my bows from an elevated rest and others from the shelf. Most of this decision has to do with the dimensions of the sight window though. Small windows I shoot from the shelf (less than 3").

3-under is the only way for me. I don't/won't even try split. I'm satisified that my curves are quiet enough.

Rick Richard

I have an adjustable bow and nothing I have been able to do makes it quiet as split. With that said, I shoot much better 3 under and the little bit of noise I do get is more than tolerable.

**DONOTDELETE**

I think you guys are going to find that the string angle of your bow at full draw has more to do with noise than tiller adjustment.

Like overbo said here, how much finger play in the release changes how much slack comes out of the string....

DIAMONDBACK

Kirk summoned it up nicely, for those that are worried about the noise difference if u are concentrateing on the shot u dont notice it.The deer dont notice it either,

Very nice Kirk...

My sketch was similar and communicated the same deduction, however my vertical arrow positions remained unchanged.
