Ft Carson, CO?

I was just wondering if anybody has hunted this area. I am going to head out there next week for some small game and maybe elk in the future. I really do not know the area. I hear there are 40 or more sub areas within their hunting zones. Any info would be awesome.

Just a heads up..Down range areas are only open during big game seasons and to hunt you need to attend a yearly breifing in order to get a pass that will allow you to check in to hunt..... Its kind of a pain in the butt .... That said, one or two really big elk are killed on Carson every year

When my brother was stationed there in the mid 90's they always closed the "archery areas" with the most game numbers right before the season started, then opened them for the rifle season; kinda made one wonder. Happened three years in a row to him.

I was heading out there Wed for the the class but I did not know the areas were closed right now. Are there any areas open?

Check the regs, most small game ends next Thursday.

As of two years ago they never let any civillians down range unless they had a big game season open.

Lots of turkey,few elk and deer. I got 5 shots at turkeys one year and missed all shots. Nice country.

Also, training has priority. If an area was open, and a unit signs for the land to train, then it will close. This can happen with little notice. I'm currently stationed there, and never bother hunting it, cause of the pressure. Small game may be a different story, but again, I have other places I frequent. If you want to shoot at a extremely nice 3D and 2D archery range, let me know and I'll try getting you in as a guest. It's at the Airforce Academy.

Britt were you using a bow or shotgun turkey hunting? That sounds a lot like my goose hunting ability. Do any of you guys ever see antelope out there? I was putting in for an antelope tag right now.

I was using my bow,spot and stalking turkeys. Alot of birds. I probally would have missed with shotgun too. I never seen antelope on the fort. Check out north east of Greeley for antelope hunting. Pawnee Grasslands. The Air Force Academy has the BEST archery range in the country. Chech it out. Alot of 3D's shoots in the area.

I was stationed there in the 90's as well. 92-94 and 96-99. I hunted almost every unit on Carson and loved the place. Not sure what the rules are now but civilians were allowed then. If an area was open there were an alloted number of people allowed in it.
I would talk to fish and game there or range control if they still run the access.
Don't overlook the close to the main post areas. Back then I saw some monster bucks and bulls on Carson. Filmed a bunch. Saw black bears. Mountain lion sign. Blew to many opportunities on nice bulls and bucks! Area 16,17 and 43 were my favorites. Saw antelope on the far south areas.
If you can get in go check it out. Spend time hiking around it and you will be amazed at what you can find.
