Deer attractents

Does anyone make thier own deer attractants and would you be willing to share thier recipies.

I used to be an ADC worker and made my own lures and scents. I can tell you, I can't see making your own deer attractants cause it's pennies cheaper if that and the stuff that is out there works. I can say tat I made some using acorn extract and glycol, apple juice (not store bought) and glycol... the acorn worked out alright but the apple was not very good. But you can buy those in a gel that works great and is not very expensive. I like using scent that attracts all the time, not just durring certain times. plus urin and gland scets just stink. lol

Never really used any type of cover scents or attractants until this year when I saw a post about using vanilla. I am now a true believer using it as a cover scent and attractant. I spray it on my boots before I walk in and in front of my treestand on the ground and on surrounding trees. Ive watched more than a couple deer this year pick up the scent and follow my footsteps straight to the stand. It simply works. I just mix a little with water in a spray bottle.

I bought some unscented soap at a craft store. The directions said I could mix in whatever fragrence I wanted. So I mixed "buck stop" sweetcorn scent. Seemed to work BUT I didn't know it had deer urine in it. Used it till it was gone. It didn't seem to offend anyone. Then again I didn"t tell anyone.

A local archery shop owner would mix up Olds Spice aftershave and vanilla extract.

I had a trail cam on a swamp scrape. I had no less than 3 different bucks every night on it and sometimes 5. All but one or two small bucks BUT...I put some tinks 69 pee on it and the pics continued except there were more pics of does....BUT, I put tinks Gel on the same scrape and did not get another pic for 4 days.
Point is I believe good scouting and time in the stand works better than scents.All pics were at night with ZERO daytime pics on a scrape a mile in the swamp.RC

On the vanilla... I got my dad's snow blower all prepped for him before going out one day. Since I couldn't get rid of the gas smell on my hands, I gave them a quick dousing with some of the good vanilla I got from the Amish store. You should have seen all the does licking their noses and lifting them high in the swirling air, trying to figure out where that smell was coming from.

Gonna agree with RC on this one.  I've had similar experiences using scents with trail cams on well used runways.  I tend to get more pics on trails/scrapes without scents than those with them. Maybe some work, but I haven't had any success using them.

Diluted Vanilla Extract in a spray bottle .....I spray it in, on or over the better shooting lanes/openings.....seems to cause them to linger just a tad longer....which is about all you can ask for I'd say.   Keep it low though,  in the event they want to lick at it or whatever....dont need them lickin' high and possibly focusing right up at me if Im in a tree stand!!!

I would fear putting vanilla out where I hunt.  I would have bears climbing my tree to get the spray bottle.

Had some luck in KS with estrous lures, but the same thing scares the deer here at home.
