I'm hunting a farm in LA (lower Alabama) that is loaded with live oaks, probably 95%.  The ground is covered with them but didn't find much evidence that they are feeding on them. Anyone have experimented with whitetails and live oaks?

I`ve seen some trees here the deer will wear out and some the acorns rot on the ground in the same area and same deer. Some or just bitter i guess.RC

Live oaks usually play second fiddle to the other oaks in my area.  Will they eat them? Yes. Will they pass them up for a red oak or shin oak?  Yes.  I read somewhere that the tannin level is higher? so they are more bitter.

From my experience theere are other options for deer that they prefer. That doesn't mean they will not eat them however.  I have seen the ground beneath live oaks littered with the untouched acorns.  But we have white oaks, red oaks, plenty of browse, and  the surrounding hunters provide enough corn to feed the world whitetail population .

Tast one.... Then try a white oak. Live oak is a lot more bitter.
