Well I haven't had an opening week like this in a long time. Or at least I dont recall one if I did. I told myself at the start of the season I was going to shoot the first few deer that came by and gave me a good shot opportunity (except for young bucks.) Luckily I haven't had to pass anything. Well late last week my good friend Mike calls me about a possible new hunting spot and says he going to check it out on Sunday afternoon after church. I asked to go along on the property scout and he said sure. Told me to bring along my gear that we would hunt a peice of property he had permission on not far from where we were going. He said he was going to try a ground set up with his ghillie and I could do the same or bring a stand along. I choose to bring my lone wolf hang on. We got to where we were hunting about 3pm and he gave me a quick run down of what the game plan was. Simple enough. Hug the south edge of the 40 with a north wind. Before we left the truck I asked him if this was a shoot whatever walks (minus little bucks) kinda hunt. I always ask when Im a guest because believe it or not Ive had people get a little upset when you shoot a doe or fawn. People and their crazy buck hunting. Mike looked at me like I had three eyes when I asked him about shooting whatever. I knew without a word spoke from him I had my green light. Didn't take long to find a nice straight tree and get atop my hiding perch. Hunted a great woods. Open forest floor and from my hide I could see a long way in each direction. The wind in my face and sun setting I felt like that at any moment the biggest buck of my life could walk by. As I sat day dreaming I happened to glance down in a low water way and noticed a doe and fawn browsing. They were a good 80 yards when I first spotted them and I honestly didn't give them much mind because of the distance. I did stand up just to get a better view. It wasn't long and the fawn decided the trail that lead to my stand was the way to go and made that 80 yards in a hurry. I thought about letting the young girl walk and try for the bigger doe. But, I couldn't do it. She wasn't a mere 5 yards looking away when I drew anchored and sent my arrow on its way. I knew immediately that she wasn't going to go far. With the open forest floor I watched her fall within 60 yards. This is what I found when I got down.

Since Mike was hunting between me and the truck and that was the only tag I had left I decided I would go ahead and field dress her and wait till dark not to disturb my host. I said a prayer of thanks and got to work. Upon field dressing her I found a welcomed sight. A heart shot.

Back home with the harvested game. My host Mike Me and my Shrew.

I am really blessed in life. I want to thank Mike publicly for taking me hunting. No I didn't kill the biggest buck of a lifetime but I had a friend take me hunting and thats more than anyone can ask. This day and age a man sees more posted and no tresspasing signs than invitations to hunt and I appreciate hunting a new peice of property every now and again. A friend will take you hunting. But a true friend will help drag the deer you killed back to the truck. Thanks Mike your a heck of a guy! Glad you got me into this crazy sport. I love it more than words can say!

I believe I am ready to sit out a gun season! I think my single string will be the only way I hunt from now on. I love this!

Way to go Brother, you are hard on 'em this fall.  Great shooting and keep it up. You sure got lucky when you were befriended by that ol' boy. Nothing better than having a good friend or family member to share it all with.

Dave, bud the pleasure is all mine! You are hard on them whitetails. Folks don't know it but for a kid (I say that as there is more than a decade distance between us) he can close the deal. I have never seen someone so driven to be a good hunter. Who does everything right...even shoots a little deer so an old man like me can drag it   :p

Congrats on a fine week. You are a new dad with two baby girls, a great wife and a freezer full of game. That is way cool   :campfire:

Congrats!!  Nice to have a kindred spirit to share the adventure with!
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.
