I just finished last years skull mount and put it on some Osage that was bound for the wood stove. I thought the Osage was fitting because I shot him with my Osage bow. This is the first time I did a skull mount by just leaving it in a bucket of water. It was so easy I could do it. No more boiling, beatles or burying in the garden for me.

That turned out really nice.  I love the look of the osage and very appropriate since you got it with an osage bow.

Great looking mount!  I'd like to know more about the cleaning by leaving in bucket of water technique.?

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

I just caped out the head and put the skull in a 5 gallon bucket of water for two months ( really stinks). When done hose it off and put some of hair bleach stuff on it to make it white.

It does look very nice.  Since building a few bows with osage I've grown very fond to that yellow wood.
A suggestion, though, only use peroxide to bleach the skull/bones as bleach will continue to erode the bone over time whereas peroxide will not.

Wapiti Chaser

I used stuff that hair dressers use. Its a powder you mix with peroxide haven't had any problems yet but have only done three or four that way.

Oooooooo, THAT'S gotta STINK. How far from the house did you leave it?
      Looks very good however!
Hmmmmm. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm
not sure that what you heard is what I actually meant!

Cyclic-Rivers

Looks great Bob. i still have to bleach last years skull!

This is the motivation I needed.

That looks great but I get that bucket of water did stink.
She said " did you see that?" He said "Of course!!!" She said " Why did you step in it then?"

PA Bones

That looks great.  I am going to try your method on my next skull mount

fmscan

Thanks for the post, I learned something and liked the osage as much as the rack...
