i have been trying many different bows and the one i would really like to find is a 3pc longbow.  thinking schafer, talltines, or ???

most 3pc longbows are just to light for me.  i like the Habu vyperkahn but dont think any 45# bows are out there. i want some thing with heavy riser like the schafer.

i like my recurves for weight, but wish they were quiet - they are just too loud.

any thoughts or recommendations?

Depends on what you like.  You can get an ILF with aluminum or phenolic riser in many lengths that will have a great deal of mass to them.  I believe the acs aluminum risers have a decent amount of heft to them as well.

a phenolic riser might be an interesting option, but i perfer heavy woods.

Bob Lee's have a heavy riser.
But I disagree that you "cannot" quiet a recurve. I have recurves that make a quiet thump just as a longbow does. Good luck in your search..Henry

maybe my recurves are not loud, but they sound loud to me.  my comparison is my Habu vyperkahn with longbow limbs.  that bow is quiet!

i would love to get the schafers quiet, but seem loud to me.

Toelke lynx.  He uses heavy woods and phenolic in the riser, quick and quiet.

Hey Mike,

A good option is to use brass antler knobs.  I have a set if you'd like to try them.   They'll increase the overall mass weight real quick and look great.  I know Dave and Beth have them in stock.   You want the smaller one if you'll be putting them on a longbow.

tim - i put some on the ACS but still really light compared to a schafer riser.  just thinking some one must make quiet longbow limbs for a heavy schafer style riser.

I had the same thoughts and ended up putting together a 62" 45lb @28" A&H ACS CX with an actionwood 14" RC riser.  Then I put a 4 arrow Eagleflights bow quiver with angle bracket and 3 arrows in it for a little more weight.  It shoots great and is dead quiet.

Tim

A 64" silvertip recurve and a quiver full of arrows is a heavy bow.   The only other similar setup in a longbow version might be a Bear Paw by Neil Jacobson, another Montana guy only a few miles from Dave.

Hummingbird Kingfisher 3 piece takedown w/ Kingwood riser.
Nice and heavy,
nice and beautiful,
nice and quiet,
nice and fast.

These are very nice bows.
I had a really good group going... until I shot the second arrow.

My best bows are the ones someone else didn't want.

I just finished one up with a phenolic riser.  ITs my heaviest mass weight bow.  and yes, dead quiet.

Try a Tomahawk Legacy series. They are not a super heavy bow but they do have a decent weight to them and they are super quiet.

Jim Gainey @Black Creek Bows will make you an all phenolic riser TD Siren.  I shot one today with a "mostly" phenolic riser, and the weight was noticable.  As with all Jims bows it was also very quiet.

check out hitman, his risers have some weight to them

Black Canyon bows has a longbow that fits the bill.  He has a great design that is smooth and quiet.  He uses Dymondwood and has just little more mass than many 3pc longbows, but not bulky looking.  A couple buddies have them and I really enjoy the feel.

Pronghorns are sweet longbows. Herb will build the riser out of whatever you want, and maybe even add some lead if you want it real heavy.  ;)

I'll add my Firefly to the mix.  With a Kanati bow quiver it is quieter than any other bow I've shot seemingly regardless of where I have it braced.
