Has any one here ever filled and aluminum with sparse foam or cotton or really any. Other material to deaden the sound. I like my aluminum arrows but since I have started shooting wiodies , I can hear the diffference when shot. It a hollow thump instead of that solid sound I get from a wood arrow.
So i was thinking of a lightweight poly type fill or spray foam. Does it affect spine ? Add a ton a weight?
I have some old 2213s laying around I might practice filling but wanted to see if anyone else has tried this.

I've thought about it for carbons to add weight, but thought it would be a messy attempt with the spray foam.

If you do it post up your findings. I'm curious.

I will for sure. I dont have all the fun gagets to give exacts, so its going to be very unscientific. Ill shoot a bare shaft and feel how heavy it it before and after the fill.

I filled some 2213 shafts with fiberglass retsin to make them heavy for shooting fish. I was too cheap to buy the solid fiberglass shafts.

I've heard of people filling aluminum with sand or polyester rope.    ;)
Just one more step please!

I use to fill my arrows with foam (block type), I actually would shove the arrow into the block several times till it filled. Worked pretty good and would gain weight as well. Now I use the weight tubes from 3 rivers.

Oh update. Filled arrow with sprayfoam. And it felt like a solid fishing arrow. Will try to acquire block foam from job site and try that out.

Did it affect your spine?

I have filled some with polyester rope like Arwin was saying.  It did not affect spine as far as I could tell.  The rope really quieted the aluminum ping.

They shoot good and hit solid, but they have a rainbow trajectory.  They shoot pretty close to arrows without the rope out to 18 yards or so.  After that they really shoot low.

GD , I do not have a spine tester, so officially I do not know. But when I shot it out, about 10 yds was the farthest I could could go without it dropping.

Filling with anything will affect spine.Anytime you add weight to the rear it stiffens the shaft.Since your balance point is not in the middle, but forward of center, that means you are putting more weight in the rear of the shaft than the front. That's why you get a stiffer DYNAMIC spine. It may not show on a spine tester.I think it wouldn't take a lot to tune for it but you would have to change something to have a well tuned arrow.

I personally haven't seen any problem with aluminums and noise unless they weren't tuned properly.

I fill mine with foam backer rod. It does a great job of reducing noise and is fairly light weight. It comes in several different diameters and depending on your shafts you may have to squeeze it down a little to get it in the shaft.

It increased spine just a little, but they flew just great!

Years ago during our winter league shooting we used to fill other guys arrows with beer when they were not paying attention.

A different amount in each arrow so they would all fly different.

It was all fun and games.

It's amazing how much the beer will foam up and spray out.   That's about the time I switched to swaged arrows.

years ago i filled some 2018's with finely granulated sugar, bumped the weight up to 1020grs with a 2bld. black diamond delta, they flew great but penatration was not as good as i was hoping for, really silenced the bow as well.

Carbonflyr,
That sounds like a sweet arrow, and if in a pinch you have a ready available source of carbs.
