Hey gang I'm just looking for some broadheads that ya'll recommend...
So far I'm thinking a 3 or 4 blade non-vented design in the 165-200 grain range. I would also like it to have a wider 1 1/2" or more cutting diameter...

Thanks for any input

TURKEYFOOTGIRL

Check out the Simmons line up.  The safari head is 205 grains and 1 9/16 cutting diameter.  You may also be able to get a bleeder blade but I see no reason to shoot 4 blades with the Simmons,

I have looked at those and they are one that I'm leaning towereds trying

Ive gotten GREAT FLIGHT out of 165gr Simmons Landsharks and 150gr Woodsman Elites....I like both of these.

You asked about a 3-4 blade, and are now leaning Simmons?  Not trying to claim any head is "deadlier" than another (Simmons are great), but a 1 1/8" or 1 1/4" 3 blade will have more cutting diameter than a 1 1/2" 2 blade.  If penetration is not an issue, I'd recommend VPA Terminators or Wensel Elites (basically same head) in 200 - strong, good length to cut ratio, fairly easy to sharpen, non-vented, spin and fly well.

I thought the land sharks came in a version with a bleeder blade and that's the one I'd be interested in...

I do agree you get a far greater wound channel from a 3 or 4 blade head... I use slick trick mags with my compound and they are devastating but I would worry about penetration with those having a fairly steep blade angle and not cut on contact design for use with my recurve

CRS

My first thought when reading the title was scary sharp and in the right place.

Now on to the original question.  I am a died in the wool two blade guy, but those VPA heads have me thinking.  So I think LimBender nailed it.

CRS your definately right about scary sharp and in the right place... I'm not at all trying to find a head that will compensate for me not doing my job in placing the arrow...

I'm only looking for something like this based off my experience with the slick trick heads I use with my compound setup. Slick trick mags are scary sharp 4 blade heads with 1 1/8" cutting diameter and they leave amazing blood trails. They do more damage than larger 2 and 3 blade heads that's why I'm looking for something slightly larger in a 3 blade or bleeder blade type of head but I don't want to go to the point that penetration will suffer

The old Bear Razor heads with the bleeder worked great for many years. Can still find them at flea markets, yard sales & such. Easy to sharpen, fly great & are definite killers.

Definately going to look closer at those VPA's so far they have come with high regard from you guys... My only concern with when I first looked at them is it seemed the 175 grain and heavier heads are pretty long, though that may be necessary to keep blade angle low and aid in penetration?

LimBender

You said yourself that SlickTricks have a steep blade angle.    It is part of the design - not 3:1, but getting close.   There are a lot of great heads, but not as many in the 200 grain range.

I shot a 175gr Woodsman Elite, VPA, same thing; with a 50gr insert last week out of a compound. Yeah I still have a couple and shoot em every now and then. I'll tell you what, not only did I get great arrow flight out to 80 yards, but I guarantee you that that long lean 3 blade will out penetrate a slick trick any day of the week and then some. Chisel tip heads with steep blade angles are junk, imo.

Another option to consider is a Magnus Stinger 4 blade with a brass insert to make up for the lack of weight. I'd shoot the 150 gr head with a 50gr brass insert. I've killed a lot of animals with the stingers in the old days, they are a super penetrating head and fly great. And yes, they are long and lean too.

Milk River Stickman

Take a hard look at STOS heads.  Two blade heads, but you should consider them.  easy to get hair pop'n sharp, spin and fly excellent, and unmatched penetration.  I have always had awesome blood trails.  I have shot three and four blades with and without bleeders...liked them too, but the STOS head is my favorite.  I shoot 145 grns.  Good luck!
