does anybody ever dove/pheasant/small game bird hunt with a sticknstring?i have seen a few pics and heard of people trying it.. i assume you would use flu flus but what head woould be used and that may fly right? some type of "wide , round" big surface area type head that would "catch" the bird in flight?? any pics of heads or "bird setup" would be great . thanks alot   seth

smokin feathers

i have a friend that sets up his tent blind on waterholes and uses his recurve and flu flu's. My family likes to eat dove wrapped in bacon with jalapeno's to much to be able to do that. Will break out the shotgun this evening!!

Just remember the limit on doves is usually 15 birds per day, so please don't overbag!

At least a pretty industrious effort.

Yes,,...I have dove hunted with trad bows...the problem with doves is that they see the arrow coming and will dodge it.  It is fun, but very challenging due to them maneuvering.

Would highly recommend a longbow. The doves seem to perceive the recurve limbs as a falcon diving in on them then twist and turn.

Best of luck!!!!!!!!

I hunted doves with a Custom Kodaik at Patoka Lake in 1984.

I used flu-flus with commercial and homemade Snaro heads. Like Terry wrote above, you can see the dove watch the approaching arrow and adjust flight.

My son and I have had success hunting them with flu-flu's and snaro points.  They do move just slightly but the snaro made a big difference in clipping them.  Like somebody said, try not to over bag them.  The limit here is 3 per 10 years so I'm right on the money.

Bowwild, I will be dove hunting at Patoka Lake this weekend. Probably going to leave the longbow at home though.  :)
This stuff ain't no rocket surgery science!

Carbonkiller

ive killed a half dozen or so...but not in the same day:) i use flu flus and have a few old carbons, all with hex heads.

I have shot pheasant out of the air and plan on trying for dove this year. Season starts today but I have no where close to go so it will have to wait a few days.

Here is a pic of the pheasant I got last March:

I used a field point for my pheasant because we were using dogs. I will use a homemade bird point for the doves. There is also a commercial bird point called a snaro. You can get them from 3Rivers.

thanks guys for the help. ill check out the snaro. yea i think i'll probably starve if i get too serious into archery dove hunting.  i am going to try one day though. well, our dove season starts this saturday , so i guess ill be toting the ol' 12 ga!

graybarkhunter

what grain are the snaro's?? anybody know? would a 6" around "point" fly good? maybe i'm looking into this too hard.. i ll just take my shotgun. thanks!

oxnam

Take your bow and shoot field points or blunts if that is all you have.  You will have a lot more fun and better stories.  The larger heads greatly increase your chance of success though.  Another option is Magnus Bullhead which gives you a wide swath and doesn't slow down your arrow as bad as a snaro.

I would recommend using the least amount of fletching as practical/safe in your terrain.  With smaller fletching the arrow is faster and they will be a little less visible.

If you can shoot at them as they are just landing, I think you will be a lot more successful.  They can't manuever as well when the are backpedaling.

If you are taking dogs, take a shotgun to make sure they have something to retrieve.  They need to have fun also.

kondors, snaros, judos i will take and make a saw blade pattern on a washer and put it behind the field point it works farelly well.
OH BOY IS THIS GREAT!
