I have a Herway Carnivore recurve that is 60" and 47lb@28". The bow shoots pretty good with the current setup I'm using but seems a little loud when shot, I have bush hush on the string and use wool silencers on the string.  I hear many people talking about brace height in the 7-8" range, this bow has a brace height of 6 1/4". I'm not an expert when it comes to this kind of thing and was wondering if this seems kind of short and if this would make the bow shoot louder. I'm drawing 27", shooting off the shelf, Beman MFX 500 arrows that are 29", 50gr insert, 150 gr head, 5" feathers, split finger.

I'm no expert but, for a recurve, that does sound a bit low to me. Hopefully someone with more experience will be along soon. I usually see that kind of brace on a longbow more than a recurve.

Anyway of contacting the builder? They would be the ultimate source for that info.

Sounds a bit low to me as well.

Check the bottom of your serving.  If it looks worn compared to the top of your serving, the noise you hear may be the string hitting your bow arm.

Hitting your arm can be one side affect of a much to low brace height.

It sounds way low. With that much silencer on it,it should be quiet.Wind the string up till it gets quiet but no more.7" is low for many recurves.I have one that likes 6 3/4"-7".It is probably the lowest brace height I've ever had on a recurve. If the bow was silent,I'd say let it go.

Sent out an email to the builder , just waiting for a response from him, thought I would post here and see what kind of responses I would get. So if I want to make the brace height longer I need to actually shorten the string by twisting, could I also purchase a shorter string?

Sounds a little low to me as well.

I suspect you're an inch low on the brace height, maybe more.  That's an awful lot of twists.  May need to buy another string.

Your set-up sounds pretty spine stiff as well.

Different bows like different brace heights. Take it to the range and play around with it. Crank it up a 1/4 inch at a time, shooting a dozen or so arrows each time and see how it shoots/sounds/feels. If you change it a good bit, and find the bow feels and sounds better, you may have to retune for perfect arrow flight..

SCATTERSHOT

The noise you hear may be the arrow (too stiff) striking the risr on relaease, combined with a too low brace height. try a weaker shaft and a higher brace, around 7 3/4".

Good luck!

First of all I want to thank everyone for responding to my concern.

I received a response from Rebecca Brown(builders wife) telling me that brace height should be at least 7 1/2". She asked for some more info on the bow since I purchased it slightly used from another individual. I gave her the info so its possible that this string is not the proper length for the bow.

I would recommend 7-8 inches as a starting point for a recurve. I have seen them braced as low as 6 1/2" out to about 9". However for my tomahawk I use a 7 1/4" brace height and this is on the low side of what is recommended for it.
