I was just doing some looking around on here trying to find some info on hog hunting. I'm going to be in Wise Virginia for a week in August visiting my wife's family, but I'm hoping to sneak out for a day or two hunting for hogs.  Wise Virginia is within an hour of both Kentucky and Tennessee so I've been doing research on all three of these states. The only state I found was TN that has year round hog hunting that was close to there but it has to be private land which is obviously a problem for me since I don't know anyone there. Kentucky doesn't have anything on hog hunting. Can anyone help me find a place to shoot at some hogs...I owe it to my Schafer to at least try!  :archer2:

Thanks for any information and if this is in the wrong spot please forgive me Mods but this seemed like the best place.

Kentucky is a terrible hog hunting place and frankly, we want to keep it that way.  If someone in KY has a hog hotspot you can be pretty sure someone is breaking the law (or benefitting from someone who is/has) against the release of these landscape scurges.

Kentucky didn't even have a season listed for hogs from what I could find.  Tennessee looks like my best bet at this point.

No need wasting time in WV. Limited season and even more limited hogs in southern part of state.

Within those three states your best bet is gonna be Tennessee.  I have heard mostly good reports about the Clarkrange Lodge operated by Ken Moody in TN.  They use dogs to hunt pigs.  I have never personally hunted there.  Something to keep in mind.  I see alot of guys post threads looking for a public land hog hunt in conjunction with a family vacation and only have a day or two to hunt.  Even on a good property thats really not enough time to get it done unless you have some pig hunting experience.  It's not as easy as the magazine artictles make it sound.

I don't anticipate actually killing one, but it sure would be fun to take my bow for a walk down south....and who knows maybe I'll find me a dumb one.   :D

A feral hog in KY is legal game all year by a licensed hunter. Same for Coyote.

They are pretty rare and spotty. The area around Dale Hollow Lake had some. I hear Florida is covered up with em.

I live a couple counties above Wise in Buchanan County.
NO wild hogs that I know of in Virginia.

I think Tennessee is you best bet as others have said, but also check out the south western end of North Carolina. I think my brother told me they have some hogs there. Not sure of the seasons though. But it would only be a few hours drive from Wise.

there are russian boar in the mountains of NC, but all the feral pigs are concentrated on the rivers way out by the coast.

Stumpsniper, if you don't have any luck finding a place to hog hunt, you could still bring your stick and I could take you "stump" hunting while you are in ! I live within 30 min of wise.

Just another suggestion.........

I don't reckon they'd be fantastic table fare...... but they're plenty of coyotes in Virginia. Including Wise.

Forget Virginia for hogs, the farmers don't tolerate loose pigs at all.

The coyotes, on the other hand, are an entirely different matter.

there are some hogs here in Tennessee on the plateau but they are pretty tough to hunt.  there are a couple of places in or near Crossville, Tn that you could definately get on a hogs but they are pay to hunt places.

stumpsniper

I could switch gears and do a coyote hunt but I don't know the first thing about coyote hunting either.  And Nathan I will definitely bring my bow and will take you up on the offer if I can't find a hog hunt.

Any recommendations on any of the pay to hunt places?  I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on a pay to hunt place without some info first.

Looks like North Carolina isn't too far either if anyone has info for there

Central NC has tons of hogs. For your driving distances- google polkton nc in union county. It's smack in the middle of the pig population. There are only 6 counties in the state that recognize them as wild boar, the rest they are considered feral pigs/hogs and can be hunted year round, night and day. I've got one guy that does hog hunts. Have never hunted with my bow yet over there but he says he can do it.

Graham, Cherokee, and Swain counties. Mostly in Graham County. But be advised, they are regulated in these counties. Therefore, there is a season and limit and all that jazz.

"Hunters harvest 100 to 200 boar each year in North Carolina. Approximately 75 percent of these are harvested in Graham County."
