You'll catch on soon enough. And there is a wealth of knowledge just waiting to help any way you need. Ask away with your questions, and also check out the search feature. Most everything you might want to know is already out there if you become proficient with doing searches.

thanks for the info whip . ive been told im a natural shooter, but i got all wrapped upin all that speed. i just got tired of wackin those deer with the compound. i havent got my bow yet but ill need arrows correctly spined. ill need to figure my draw length. wich is around 29 with a release aide. and the list goes on.a buddy said 2016 easton should work for a good starting point. whats you thoughts .

Whip

I don't know much about aluminums, so not much help there.  First thing like you say will be to find your draw length.  It is likely to be different than when you shot the release, maybe a couple inches shorter.  So you might end up drawing that 50# Kodiak to about 27", which would mean you will be pulling about 47#. (each inch of draw is about 3# on most bows)

Lost of trad shooters have been going to carbons because they tend to be more tolerant of a wider range of weights.  But maybe someone with knowledge of aluminum arrows will chime in with some ideas on what might work in that type of shaft.

Troutguy, welcome to the Gang   :wavey:  I agree with your buddy--I have had great success with 2016 shafts from all of my bows--recurve and longbow ranging from 45-55# at my 28" draw--arrows are 29 1/2" long to the back of the point. It seems to be a very adaptable shaft size.  Part of the fun of trad archery is experimenting with different parts of the gear.....Dave

thanks whip thats more than i knew before. in 79 / 80 i used a half wooded half fiberglass arrow with a hilbrook broad head 125.do they even make those arrows any more, i havent a clue who manufactor was that made them but they flew straight out of 45 pd recurve.

troutguy

dave is that 29 1/2 from inside nock to end of shaft? why wouldnt go to 28 1/2 if your draw is 28 ? this is why im glad i joined the site. this is a whole new monster. i have a pile 2117 i guess ill use them for tomato stakes next year.
thanks for the welcome dave.

troutguy

also any thoughts on a bear kodiak 60/ 50 pd bow.
and whats the difference between the kodiak and the super kodiak  ??

Whip

Not only does the arrow shaft material affect the spine, or stiffness of the arrow, but the length affects it as well.  A shorter arrow will act somewhat stiffer coming out of a bow than a longer arrow would.  So in tuning your arrow to your bow you are better to leave them long to begin with and then trim them down as might be needed to stiffen them.  If it turns out that they fly good at the longer length, that's fine.  A little longer won't hurt a thing.  But you can't go backwards and add length if you cut too much.   ;)

The Kodiak was built until 1966, and was replaced in the line up by the Super Kodiak.
