I finally broke my antlered deer curse this past week.  Even though I consistantly shoot does, it seems I never have a buck pass that I decide to draw on.

I used a "get out of jail free" card the other night and had my mom pick up my daughter from school.  This allowed me to add three steps to my set up and be tied in to my Tree Saddle by 4:00.  I set this spot up the previous Friday and passed two small bucks and a doe.  I took the picture of where I was hoping the shot would take place on that Friday.  I'm glad I did as it adds to the story.

About an hour before dark, a few deer passed just out of sight.  It still gets dark in the woods pretty quick.  Thirty minutes later I heard a short chase and three does came to the base of my tree.  I could hear the grunts following behind.  Once I saw the G-2's I knew I was shootin.  The shot was at the base of the broken holly over my right shoulder in the picture.  I think about eight yards.  I used a different bow than the one hanging.

My brother was there to finally get a field pic.  I wish he told me about the tongue as it drives me crazy that I didn't notice it.  In DE we get two buck tags so I'm being very picky from now on.

I used a 60#, 62" Mattawoman II longbow by Tom Parsons of Kimsha Archery.  My arrow was a GT 55/75 with 100 grain brass insert and 200 grain Razorcap.  If I had known the shot would be so close, I would have used one of the Surewoods I was carrying.  Oh well, thats for the next one.

I wanted to add that on both occassions I hunted this spot, I wissed at the base of my tree.  The first sit, a doe peed right on top of it and the second time three large experienced does hung out until I finally shot the buck.  Downwind the whole time.  Besides that, I hunt as clean as possible.

Nice buck and know what you mean about the tongue, just takes a second to tuck it back in and makes for a better picture. Maybe for the next one.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.
