Shooting Through the Screen

Here we go again. Ground blind is up. (Ameristep). Sat in it today and was debating whether to take the screens off the windows. Can you really shoot through those screens with no effect on the shot? Has to do something I would think? If not the broadhead, the feathers would have to catch, drag, etc.  Should I or shouldn't I shoot through the screens? Of course, we're assuming that I'm going to see something to shoot at!!!!

Here are a couple of old threads.  i've never had a problem with the mesh altering arrow flight...depth perception later in the evening is a bigger problem to me.  I would recommend taking some practice shots.  Good luck to you!

Shoot through. It does not effect the flight a bit, unless you shoot a mech. broadhead. Even some of those work now. Field points  two and three blade no problem. Muzzy Phantoms no problem. Like Rastaman suggested practice with your equipment.  Jim

Even though you can shoot through them, I don't simply because of Murphy's Law.......if you get my drift.

I'm told that deer will shy from the "black hole" if the screen is not in place. Turkeys don't seem to care.

That has been my experience, Don, with whitetails in Georgia and Alabama.

The deer meat that was in my freezer is all the proof I needed to prove to myself that "Yeppers"
you can shoot right through that stuff!!

I cut a 3-4" triangle (point up) at the location where I plan to shoot.  It doesn't spook the deer and gives plenty of room for the arrow to pass thru without deflection.

I have had no problems at hunting ranges with sharp cut on contact broadheads. If you are worried about the feathers catching make sure the leading edges are nicely smoothed into the shaft with not protrusions. There is nothing like shooting a few practice arrows to relieve any doubt you may have. The netting works great.

I can't count the number of animals I have shot through the mesh. I love the stuff and don't build a ground blind without it.

Great advice Bill!! To make absolutely certain you can put a drop of fletch tite on the tip of the feather so insuring that it will allow whatever to slide right over without catching.

If you think about it your arrow flys better through the screen than without.  Any fishtail do to release will be taken out as the feathers pass through the netting.

You guys are confidence builders. I'm going to bit the bullet this year and leave the screens in. I would not mind missing (much) but I would mind turning a good shot into a wounding shot. That's not nice.

Gotta trust this stuff however. I'm not sure about the black holes. I've shot thru no mesh before and the deer didn't even seem to notice the blind. Of course I have it out 2-3 weeks before Oct 1 and don't go back to it until Oct 1

No problem shooting through the mesh....but, like "rastaman" said above: It does affect your depth perception at low light.
Plus, when you fall asleep and wake up with deer right outside your blind, it's hard to shake the cobwebs and blurry vision because of the screen distortion.........or so I've heard ...somewhere

LOL   Someone has caught me snoozing I see. Nothing like taking a nice nap in the woods on a slow day. Isn't that something how when you're asleep even if not in a blind they will come right up to you

I've taken a snooze on the ground and woken up to find deer just a few feet from me grazing. Of course once you move..............

I shoot with a string tracker and shoot through the mesh.  What Bowmania said about the screen correcting the fishtail is spot on.  Don't hesitate to shoot through the mesh.  My only issue is videoing the hunt though the mesh.  The video is grainy.

Be sure to have your arrow properly tuned. This should be a given, however an ill tuned arrow will perfom much worse when shooting thru the mesh.

I have shot lots of animals through the mesh on my blinds. I don't think it is a problem but I have started making sure my feathers don't catch when i run my finger over the leading edge. I have had them cut me when shooting a low grip long bow. I have always put a drop of glue on the leading edge but Mike at Drayd Bow showed me a great trick. Take a field point or something round and roll the leading edge down with pressure and it really fixes the snag. I now do it on all my arrows. Just a little insurance, I can see how that could snag the net.

Right  A couple of people mentioned the leading edge. I have new arrows and I checked and sure enough there are a couple of rough spots which I have smoothed out. The field point is a nice trick. I used an old aluminum shaft but got the glue on it.
