Ryan, do you have any more pics that you could share? I'd love to see more pics of the countryside and wildlife.

Are they rutting like crazy right now? Were all the males in hard horn or were you seeing some in velvet too?

I was hunting in the tx Hill country this past weekend (there are some good numbers of free ranging axis there - mostly escapees that have gotten loose from high fence places during floods, etc).  Usually they rut this time of year and they were bellowing like crazy.  I think a lot of people do not realize how loud and how huge they can get, to me they seem more like an elk than a deer.  Congrats again on the hunt, that is a fine animal. IMO its the best tasting venison out there.
Hey Fishnhunt,
I decided to start a new thread for the pics that you requested.

The rut is different for the different islands.  The rut is over for most of the islands. Usually the deer are in velvet during bowhunting season but you can find a few hard horns.

IMO Axis is the best meat ever!       :D

You can hop but you can't hide.
If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.

Ryan - WOW!  Thanks for taking the time to post those pics.  You've got some great trophies there! Its good to see that you're out there hunting hard in that beautiful countryside.  I'd love to make it to Lanai some day.

I'll start a new thread later with Axis pics from this past weekend once I get em downloaded.  I saw some huge bulls but did not take any shots.  As Al Kidner has said before....spot and stalking free ranging Axis with a tradbow is tough.  They like open ground, they look out for eachother, etc. You almost have to be a massochist to enjoy it  :) !
Congrats again!

And to think I spent 3 weeks in Hawaii for my honeymoon and never thought to bring my bow!!!!

Boy was I stupid...(although it was a much cheaper trip that way...saved big avoiding divorce costs    :nono:   )

The quest to improve is so focused on a few design aspects & compensating for hunter ineptness as to actually have reduced a bow & arrow's effectiveness. Nothing better demonstrates this than mech. BHs & speed fixated designs
