Izzy. These South Carolina swamps are one of the last wild places on earth and truly are addicting. Did y'all hear any of those longbeards hammering?
The old order is passing. Swiftly receding into memory are the days of strong, earnest men who followed an atavistic yearning to pit their skills against wild animals.

I know, Beachie. Wild lookin' one, huh?

I've got a couple white ones with black patches on them, and some red ones, but that is real unusual.

Glad we got that one out of the gene pool!!!!
Ray, Everything I know about hogs I could fit into one sentence.   :o   So why would you want a boar like that out of the gene pool?  What causes the marbled or spotted pigs?
Chasing my kids and my degree for now but come next fall the critters better look out.  ;)

Sunny Hill, your right on about the addictiveness of those old growth swamps. The longbeards were blasting off yesterday morning but with so many different birds calling they kind of blended in.I saw a mess of pileted woodpeckers but I kept a close eye on them hoping to rediscover an ivory billed.Im am a richer man for having experienced such a pristine, somewhat intact habitat. If I never saw a pig all weekend I would have had a successful hunt.Took pics of a beautiful bobcat print in the mud, aradillos from inches of my boot, owls, saw wood ducks by the score and a mess of deer and turkey. One buck still had his headgear on him. After finding those artifacts my imagination really ran away  and I wondered about the fellas that made em and what they were hunting the day they dropped them.A truly enchanting place and Im glad Ray and his people appreciate the value of such a place and nurture it as they do.

Izzy

Photobucket fried my brain tonight but Ill try again tomorrow.I got some great pics.

We have the spanish strain of sus scrofa (swine) Kenneth.

They are either black, or a reddish brown.

Anything that has all that coloring in it is due to farm pigs that got away from their masters and mixed in with the true wild spanish hogs that have been here for 500 years roaming free.

We like the black ones and want to keep as much of the color out of our herd as we can- its nearly impossible since there are no fences and the pigs roam up and down the river as free as birds.

Ray, I think you should cull all the black and reds and specialise in them there "Marble" pigs.  :biglaugh:

Ray, that's what I thought but wasn't sure.  I know we had some pigs in WV that were a bunch of farm hogs that got washed down river during a flood in 85' and they survived and started showing up in the deer woods about 10yrs ago and most of them were spotted kinda like.  Thanks for the education.       I'll be in NC in a week so I'm gonna start trying to find a place to chase a few hogs soon before I get a job lined up and before I start using that GI Bill again.
