BCY has a new polyester (dacron) material on the market called B-55.  They advertise low stretch and increased durability, but still safe for all bows.

I haven't tried it yet, but I have material samples on the way.  Once I look it over, I'd like a few serious shooters to try it out and give me some feedback--noise, stretch, creep, feel, etc.

If you are interested, e-mail me at chad@recurves.com.

B55 has been around for 10 years or more. I had problems with breaking strings at the metal nocking point.

Chad,
I have a few older Bears,Wings, Pearson that use dacron. Will follow this to see where it leads. Thanks for the input.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

LBR

Shaun, B-55 is brand new.  My guess is you are thinking of B-75 (Brownell).  That material was taken off the market years ago, for the reason you noted.  BCY had a similar material then, PENN 66, that was also taken off the market.

Those two materials are why I plan to do a lot of testing before offering strings made from any new material.

Tom, give me a holler or shoot me an e-mail.

Sounds like a good idea. Quiet, safe and did I say quiet bow strings...... I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks

You may be right about B75. I just remember is was like B50 but low stretch - and that it broke!

I'm not serious but it sounds pretty neat. I just ordered a bunch of BCY B-50 though...

LBR

cacciatore, send me an e-mail to chad@recurves.com .

Shaun, I'm positive.  I was making strings back then also, and had reservations about those two materials from the get-go.  I posted those reservations on a different site (this was before TG existed), where a popular string maker (no longer in business) was touting it as the best thing since sliced bread.

I was referred to as pretty much everything but smart and honest for voicing my concerns, just before both materials were pulled from the market because they were breaking with no warning.  No way I will ever forget that fiasco.

I bet I can guess the website!

It sounds interesting. I have a 55# Mahaska longbow that takes B50, but the hand shock is awful with it. I am using a skinny D97, padded and served with yarn on it now...zero hand shock! I wonder if B55 would have less shock than B50. Do you know what the strand strength is? How does the cost compare to B50?

If it has less stretch, it will have less shock.  BCY doesn't publish breaking strength anymore, but they reccomend the same number of strands as they do with B-500.  No idea on the cost yet, but I figure it will only be a little more than B-500.

You and me both!  There's been a lot of awful string materials hit the market over the years, and a lot of them got dang good reviews for a little while.  I plan to put this stuff through the wringer for a while before offering it to the general public.

Keep us posted on your results, Chad. I roll my own, and I still have plenty of D97 and B50 on hand, but if this stuff has the advantages of both, I could be tempted.

Thanks for testing it out for all of us!

Chad,
I sent you an e-mail re: new string material. Sounds like a real winner, if it's all it's cracked up to be.

Interesting, any idea what the difference is from standard B-50?  Wonder if they are just deriving poly from a different/better manufacturing process.

Any idea what the material used in the string are and in what proportions?
