THE PIG STICKER

I shot wheels from the age of 10 untill i was 19. Honestly This last year was the first year i went trad only. I dont even own wheels anymore. I started whith a rercurve when i was seven. Then when i was 13-14 my friend asked if i would like to build a longbow. Then i was hooked. Shot my first deer with trad when i was 14. In that same year i killed my first buck with trad. I was a happy 14 year old. But then i picked up wheels again dident harvest a buck for 4 years. Shot a couple of does with my longbow in those 4 years. Then i decided last year to sell my wheels so i wasent tempted and i harvested 4 deer and a groundhog. One of those deer was my biggest archery buck to date. My goal is to shoot trad only for the rest of my life. I love the simplicity ,and the challenge of the longbow.
I also love this site great people.

Jim

I too have decided to get rid of the wheels as of the end of 2009 after 24 years of shooting compounds.I have shot recurves and longbows off and on over those 24 years but have become tired of the wheels for good.I feel like 2010 will be a year that i feel about archery like i did when i first started all those years ago.Good for you James!      :clapper:

Fred Eichler hunts with both trad and wheel bows, and is one of the best trad archers around today. He says that he does not hunt with trad bows because they make hunting more difficult, but because they are the better hunting tool under the conditions. I guess Jim found out the same thing on his own.

Jim,
Nice to hear you finally rid yoursef of that baggage. That friend of yours must be a pretty good influence. Good thing he moved back to the area. Good to see you on here and congrats on a fine season.

He is a huge influence, and im glad he moved back. He took me out to south dakota and i know it was hard for him to move back. I seen some awsome stuff and got the chance to take my first mule deer.

Thanks doug,
Jim

Can't say that myself.  I love archery in all it's forms and although I'm primarily a recurve guy, I also shoot compound barebow/fingers and even a little compound sights/release...

myself having been trad only for the last ten years have decided to purchase a compound bow again.not switching back to wheels permanently just going to be hunting some areas that just arent very trad friendly and longer shots are the norm.i still love traditional shooting and will never give it up.i just love hunting period and will use the best tool for the area i will be hunting in.THE CHOICE is ours and nobody should knock us for it as we are all hunters.if i take an animal with a compound it wont be posted on here,if trad kill it will.that simple.happy hunting all.

Thats good Jim, I have a couple laying around that I don't shoot, An Oneida I took on trade a couple of years that I'll sell if I find anyone who wants it and a bear charger that I have had 20 some odd years that I consider kind of an antique. It has not been shoot since 1990.

lifestyle change, I agree. I just seem to enjoy hunting so much more now. I tell my wheelie friends to pic up traditional just for the pure shooting fun and every that has is now a convert.

rock_hunter

I consider myself an archer, love shooting my compound, recurve and longbow.  All have their challenges and attributes.

cacciatore

I still have some compoud bows that are collecting dust for more than 15 years, never looked back never lost a chance too.
