Alright just getting into the goody bag from Compton that includes the following:

160 grain Grizzly broadheads

KME Diamond Knife sharpener

A lot of other smaller items but I'm really excited about the KME...have several knives that are going to get some great attention very soon, my Buck knife hasn't been this excited since it field dressed my big 8pt in 2007.  If I listen closely I can hear it calling my name to be first.

So with the Grizzlies...do I sharpen them first and then mount them to the adaptors or mount them and then sharpen?

What is the best angle for the bevel?

Thanks,

Josh

What scribe line do I use...outside line or inside line?

I'd mount them first.  You are going to be shooting them before hunting, so no need to use up time and metal.  Wait until it's time to hunt to sharpen them.
Good judgement comes from experience.  Experience comes from bad judgement.

Josh... I'd definately mount them on the adapters first. If you get them like a razor and then fiddle with mounting them you are asking for a serious cut.

I see no problem with sharpening them and then shooting them. It will develope familiarity with the system and pre-establish your grind angle.

Personally I wouldn't get all crazy about changing the factory bevel. I know a lot of guys do.
I'd adjust the angle until I saw a nice even grind between the heel of the grind and the very edge... it'll get scary sharp long before you get the whole factory grind sharpened away and it makes a very durable yet razor sharp edge.

I'd use which ever reference mark gives the best grip on the blade. You'll need to determine that. The KME is easilly adjusted for the changes in angle that occurs by using the different reference lines.

Hopefully Ron will chime in soon. I'll bet he's swamped with orders after Compton's.

Josh ,

Ron could answer any questions about his products. He could even tell you what angle to sharpen those broadheads too. He has an 800 number and he's super about getting back to answer questions for people.

I also agree with Charlie about mounting the heads on the adapters before sharpening them. Kind of hard to not agree with Charlie since he is very experianced with archery and hunting.

Thanks all...I didn't think about mounting a razor sharp head on an adaptor...I'm not the most agile person so to say.

They look like a very devastating head and can't wait to get one sharp and down range at an animal.

Yeah those Grizzly heads will put a hurtin on whatever you hit with them. Just put it in the boiler room.

You're gonna love that knife sharpener. I touched up some knifes here and got my Kershaw knife sharp enough to shave my week old beard. Not that I'm suggesting anyone to do that. But the results are very positive.

Check w/ Ron on this, but I thought from discussions, the Griz comes with closer to a 30* angle and Ron changes to 25* and puts the Tanto Tip on ala Ed Ashby's reconfiguration protocol.

Them Griz is HARD and trying to change the bevel angle can make for a tiresome job...

Before you start, call Ron as suggested!

Josh,

Doing an out of the pack Grizzly is gonna require some work with either sharpener. If you give me a call I'll help you get them tuned. Knives are fairly self-expanitory but Grizzlies...Well that's a bit more involved. Thanks

Love it when you hear directly from the source!

Ron...I'll give you a ring when my family gets back from Chicago...going to take them to the Shedd Aquarium, kids are in for a treat.  Along with the taste of Chicago this is going to be a great weekend for sure.

I did put a wicked edge on an older knife last night; it is smiling in its sheath.
