It was hard enough to take the passing of my dear friend Pop Kellar, and now I regret to inform you of the passing of Allen "Cheapshot" Varnell last evening. Allen had been bravely battling cancer but was taken from us by an unrelated brain anureyism.

Allen was as fine a man as any will ever know: he was a regular fixture and selfless contributor to the Ye Olde Fartes trad club in TN, as well as at our NZ shoot of TBG and NGT events here in Georgia. Those of us who were priveliged to know him will sorely miss his genoursity, perfectly timed whit and wry smile. Prayers for the Varnells and all of us his friends during our grief.

Let this be an example to us all, get your affairs in order with both God and your family... for no man knows the number of his days. It is with great comfort that I know Allen had done both long ago.

I know that you know many fine men JC, and if you have Allen at the top of your list I truly wish I could have met him.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend.  This has been a very difficult week for you and many others.

I just read a post the other day he posted....it had lots of enthusiasm.  I had no idea he had cancer.

Prayers for the family.

Thoughts & condolences to his Family.

I never met the man, but we had plans made to get together at some point this spring.

Shame I couldn't have put a face to the name.

This hurts a lot. Allen was a good man and a great friend. He loved Skyler, Mason, and Zach. He always made it a point to give them something or pass on a little knowledge about his many skills. Allen made some of the finest Cane Arrows to have ever been shot. We will pray for you and your family Tomi.

I type this with tears running down my face. He will be missed greatly....Don

I already posted on TTAS. Not much more to say.

I took a short walk/hog hunt/stump shoot this morning before work. I thought about Allen as I passed through a patch of River Cane.

I knew Allen and his passing saddens me greatly. I don't think I ever saw him without that big, warm smile that made him an instant friend to all the people he met.

Peace for his family and friends. I've always enjoyed his posts and his presence here will be sadly missed.

God bless his family and friends. May Allen rest in peace. I did not know the man, but from the posts- I would have liked to.

Thanks for letting us know JC. Allen was a great supporter of GA shoots at Tomo Chi Chi and NGT. Just a very nice man.

Wish I would have had a chance to me Allen. Sounds like he was a great man and will be sorely missed by all those who had the honor of knowing him.

I met Allan last year at the TTAS Banquet. I bid on a set of his cane arrows but lost the bid. He told me he'd make some arrows for me if I wanted some. I tried to pay him then but he wouldn't take the money. Later when I got 6 beautiful cane arrows in the mail I tried to pay him again. He wouldn't take any money, said they were a gift. I didn't hunt with them last fall but I'll be hunting with them this year..   :archer:

It's a sad day when the traditional archery community loses a man like Allan. Our loss is Heavens gain.

My favorite gospel song is Sweet Beulah Land.  The first line in the chorus goes "Beulah Land, I'm longing for you,".  Praise the Lord, Allen is not longing anymore, he's in the very presence of my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  I'm praying for the Lord's sufficient grace and boundless mercy for his family and friends.
