Wisconsin Pheasant Hunt (pics)

So, 6 Wisconsin traditional guys headed out today, through the rain, and flung some arrows at some pheasants and hungarians... Missed a bunch, but ended up with a few too... Total bag was 6 pheasants, and 3 hungarians.  One bird taken on the wing, and the others were on the ground, but a few great shots at moving birds!  The rain kept them tight to the ground... they did not want to fly!  Made for some fun running shots, though.  Thanks to everyone who made it out.  Next year, we'll do it bigger and better, and make a whole day out of it!  

By the way, it's amazing how tough these birds are!  Hit one out of the air with a judo, it went straight down hard, and then took off running!  Hit another with a field point and a small game collar behind it, hit is square in the body, and it rolled, then took off flying for 300 yards!  Unreal!

Wing shooting is about as exciting as it gets when you connect, & a blast just watch an arrow narrowly miss. I know you had fun.  Your right about those birds being tough to kill. Those feathers provide alot more protection than one would suspect.  I am a strong believer in sharp, narrow broadheads on pheasants.  There seems to be a great deal of concern about dogs winding up w/ a broadhead in them, retrieving a downed bird-- well could happen, alot of things could Happen, in this case its unlikely--just doesn't happen in my experience.  I think the concern is way overstated.  I have had my beagles grap on to dozens of rabbits w/ broadheads in them, and projecting out the otherside-- never had a dog injured.  With Pheasants more often  the arrow is not even projecting, or has fallen out. Never had any of my bird dogs injured.  Anyway, thanks for sharing your hunt--Cool, Really Cool!

just started shooting trad have always wanted to try the pheasent hunting with bow for a long time think i have a year of two shooting before i even stand a chance at hitting one of those things. what part of wisconsin was the hunt in?

The bird knocked out of the air was with a judo... but she ran off after hitting the ground... only went a few feet, them buried herself for the recovery.  I hit another bird with a judo on the ground, she rolled, flopped, then ran and flew off.  A few "barta blunt" style heads were used too, and a few field points with and without stoppers on the back.  Everyone used flu flus, and we lost about 4 or 5 arrows between the 6 of us.

We hunted Coon Creek Sportsman's club (www.huntcooncreek.com), just west of Beloit, Wi (on the stateline between WI and IL).

Sorry, I can't list all the full names!  Most of the guys were buddies with Dale Moore, but other than Dale and I, I don't know full names... maybe someone can help with this?

Next year will be bigger, better, and a full day dedicated to traditional archery, and getting others interested in the sport.  This'll be fun!

That's cool! I've always wanted to try pheasant hunting with my bow. We don't have pheasants around where I live but I am going to book one some day.
