I never would have guessed they looked like that. I have seen a bunch of them at my dad's place in Texas, but they all looked kind of a dull charcoal gray, almost black. They are nasty SOB's for sure. I think they have the worst disposition of any snake there is. I'm glad we don't have them up here.

Oops, almost forgot to mention, that is one sweet looking bow!

When they are younger they have more pronounced stripes. They are harder to find with stripes as they get older.

This picture doesn't do it justice. It's very red colored and here it looks more leather colored.

i am usually not a snake killer, but i killed 4 in one day several years back while bluegill fishing around cypress trees...the buggers tried to get in the boat and were going crazy around the stringer of fish. i'll bet i saw 15 moccasins that day. they smelled SO SO SO fishy!  do the skins smell fishy, or does it go away after they are air dried?

hogdancer

they are very musky smelling and with practise you can smell the snake before you see him, in my experiance they do not smell once skinned and dried.

The problem for me is that I would take my bow out in the yard and shoot it 6 times with my shotgun, just on general principal.

Don't ask me to be rational around the mention of cottonmouths.     ;)    They are a detestable embodyment of evil in an otherwise gracefull, though not always kind, wilderness.

Bear,
Somehow I get the feeling that you don't care for the critter much....

You should be wading across a slew and see one coming. really bad feeling.RC

I had one get after me in SC one time that was literally as big around as my upper arm...and I have some pretty big arms!

It was not pretty, but I did manage to evade the bugger. My bottom limb was in the water the whole time or I would have shot at him...but I think the brown trail I was leaving behind me finally put him off "the scent", so to speak!

Froggy,

I might have understated it a bit, but yes, you're correct. I grew up around these things and had many close calls, and have seen their aggresive nature first hand. My eco-conscience has limits, namely cottonmouths and most parasites. Ughhhhhhhh.

do you dry snake skins the same way you do to other animal hides,i.e. pickling salt

I would be afraid to pick my bow up!!!

Broketooth, you just air dry them, no salt needed.

Got a Silvertip at Morrison as we speak of getting a set of Cottonmouth skins put on it. I should have it back by the end of next week hopefully. Will try to post some pics....
