Hi all,

Well I'm home in a week and my better 1/2 and I are looking over two blocks of land to settle on. One is 116 acres and the other is 160 & all bush so I wont need to see anyone unless I want to.   :saywhat:

My plan to to set up a shooting range with 20 odd targets. So I need some help with ideas please.

Post away!

I have one set up tip for you. Make it where you aren't shooting your bow in the same area.

I have one clear lane in my yard that is about 23yds so it's where I always shoot from. It looks like I have a 20yd 4wheeler track to nowhere in my back yard. I have to wear rubber boots to shoot now.

Al, we have 84 acres and while I've always thought about putting up some targets I never have.  Mostly I just "stump & stick" shoot.  I used judos or flu-flus.  I like it and shooting like that offers something different every time I go.  I rarely take the same path.

Al, i have a field / target/ aerial/horse archery set up in both scrub paddocks and horse pasture. For all the set up it took i usually just stump shoot anyway. I'll dig up some pics for you. Ben.

are there any feral animals or rabbits to hunt on that land?, my back yard is just a couple acres and have a block target but I like to go to where I deer hunt(110 acres) during the summer time and just stump shoot

I use the burlap bags stuffed with plastic bags then sort of stitch 'em shut with whatever string is around. Think I used fishing line on the ones I have. Then i spray paint an outline of some imaginary animal and pick a spot. This was in a TBM within the last year or year and a half I think. I get the bags free from a coffee import place and bags are free from a few of my neighbors etc. They work well and the price is right.

Al, I don't have any info for you about ranges.  Just wanted to say I'm very happy for you.  You've worked hard and made a lot of sacrifices.  Glad to see they're about to pay off for you with a nice piece of land for you and your family!    :wavey:

I'm like sharps.  I have the space, but I just prefer roaming around with judo points most of the time.  No set course, and a different target on every shot.  Most people hate dandelions, but I think God put them on the earth as targets for stump shooters!

I do have one 3D deer target, and for broadheads I use a sand pit.  It's covered with snow at the moment, but basically is a three sided box 3x6' across the back and 3x4' sides.  Posts sunk into the ground at the corners with treated wood bracing between, and then treated plywood walls to hold the sand in place.  It is a little too frozen to use right now though!

I'm like Whip. I own 20 acres with some trails that I walk and stump, weed, whatever shoot. This is my broadhead pit with 1" recycled tire matt against the back plywood to stop 2 blades. I shoot at this 95% of the time. A firm believer in shootin broadheads!
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Congrats Al. Did you not just build/buy a house a couple of years ago? Always nice to have some land.

Thanks all and yes Danny, I did buy a place that I'm currently renovating when not hunting, working or building arrows.

Some good ideas coming through now. I like the idea of a set type of shooting range(3D some of it), a BH target area and being able to rove about the place and stump an afternoon away.

If I can I'll post a pic or two of the two tracks of land in question.

Here you all go... some pics of the two blocks we are looking at.

The first one being 116 acres;

And here is the 2nd one, 160 acres.

So you can see I'll have enough space to build a our dream home on, stump shoot and hopefully have small game as well as a few Red Stags moving through both places.

Both places are gorgeous! I especially like the looks of the second one.
