Hello Guys, I just got the best Christmas gift ever my grandma called me and asked me if I wanted to fly
down to Texas and hunt hogs. I am thinking I will take to bows a thunder stick 55@28 @ my North Mist Longbow 66@28 with 600g Carbons for the thunder stick    :help:
and 1000g Woods for the Norther Mist. What bow would be better for hogs 55 pounder or the 66 pounder. Also what Head I was thinking of use in a old MA3 or the MA2.
Thanks for your help.

Well except for the BH your set up fine.  Spend a little more and use a better head.  The MA3 is jsut too soft for the job.

Woodsmans or some of the two blade single bevels will do a much better job.

thats a cool present!
both your bow arrow combos will work well on howgs so like above shoot the one you shoot best.
as for the MA3 they could do the job but i think you would be much better of going with something like woodsman.
There is more to the Hunt.. then the Horns

Cody I'am with the rest of the gang on this one.Love your bows....but the broadheads are so so at best.If this is a trip you make often then the MA-3's might be OK to try out but if these trips are few and far between for you.I would most likely try a different broadhead. At least try some of the ones mentioned above for sure...Good luck and enjoy.bowdoc

What ever bow you shoot the best and I'm with the other guys, pick a better broadhead. Personally I like WW's and STOS. I find the STOS way easier to  get really sharp. You can get the WW's really sharp too but it takes time and practice.
Aim low, right at the knee.
Good luck & come back and lets us know how it went.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.

The MA3's would be well, okay but you can do better.  You've got plenty of steam so a Woodsman or Snuffer would be a great choice, or a good 4 blade head.

Wow.  1000 grain arrow with 66#.  I think that's about 15 gpp.  Does that setup fly similar to your other setup?  Sounds like the experts have said it is more than enough.  Congrats on the trip.  Have a great hunt.

I'm with the rest of the guys here. Your bows are great, but get some STOS or Grizzlies. Hogs are way tough and those MA's are not.

ozy clint

pigs are tough. if you shoot both equally well i'd be using the 66#.
Thick fog slowly lifts
Jagged peaks and hairy beast
Food for soul and body.

Border black douglas recurve 70# and 58# HEX6 BB2 limbs

I agree with the others.  Either bow will work, but get some 2 bld BH - Zwikee's etc.  They are not very expensive and easy to sharpen.  Especially in the field if you have to touch one up just carry a file in your pack.
1000 gr. arrow might be "over kill" but suit yourself.  Just be ready to take the 30 yd shot if needed.
I go every year to Texas and hunt them, in fact we are leaving this coming weekend.

Good luck

Did you say 66lbs & 1000 grain arrow    :goldtooth:

Can you say chooo chooo train

Are you spot and stock, or tree stand, or ground blind, are you hunting over a feeder.

Because with 1000grain arrow trajectory drops pretty quick, you want under 15yd shots and you'll jump right through every thing.

Put your MA2&3's in a box and never open it again, keep'um for history, or what not to shoot.

Invest in some high quality broadheads, you would hate to make a great shot on a trophy boar, only to have your broadhead fail.

Have a great time and take lots & lots of pic's to share with us.

I seem to see that you guys think the MA-3 is too soft, weak, and that there are better broadheads out there. I can only conclude that this is lack of knowledge thought process rather than from personal experience. There is nothing wrong with a MA-3: it is tougher than most other heads out there, has true ferrule, will sharpen quickly to shave hair, is silent in flight.
The MA-3 is the same size as a WW. I have never ever broken a MA-3  but I and friends have had several WW break at the tip joint or the back blade to ferrule weld. I have buried these in the shoulder blade, shattered leg bones, drove through ribs, with no damage whatsoever.
These same guys will say why spend the big money for a Silverflame or 300 Extreme when a Magnus or WW is just as good. You guys seem to think that you have to have the latest and greatest to be successful/accepted.
Cody: Take the MA-3 and enjoy the hunt, if you need help with sharpening contact me.

your set up sounds fine Cody.55# is ample and 66# with 1000gn woodies is just asking for a pass thru.... Just keep your shots close and your camera handy ! Thats one cool Grandma ya got ! Ben

Not hijacking but have a question. Why wouldn't a sharp, well placed MA-3 be O.K.? I can't imagine they'd blow apart on a hog. Never used them, just curious.

I'm going next month and taking woodsmans and 4 blade stingers cause thats what I'm set up to shoot.

Cody, good luck and have a great time

Riverstick

Take the bow you shoot the best. I have hunted in Texas my whole life and shot numerous hogs with my recurves 54# @ 28. Mainly with magnus 125 stingers with the bleeders. No problems at all. Just remenber low and forward on the hog, just above the elbow. If you hit a big one high your just going to make him mad.

Bill Turner

Shoot the bow that you shoot the best. Change the broadhead to a tougher design. I like the Wenzel Woodsman, the Magnus I or II cut on contact or the older Bear Razorhead, without the insert. Just took a 135 pound boar, stalking, with a Bear Razorhead, out of a 57# Howard Hill "Wild Boar" on December 26th on Oklahoma public land. Love to hunt those pigs. Good luck and have fun.
