Yellow Dog

Just finished packing and will be heading to hunt zone 5 around Unionville Wednesday morning. It's been a 3 year process to get a tag and this will be my first Whitetail hunt out of Michigan. Pretty much made a career out of shooting 1 1/2 old bucks here in Michigan with my stickbows, so this is going to be a new experience for me. Don't know what to expect but I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Now that the stuff is stacked in the garage waiting to be loaded in my hunting partners truck, 5am Wednesday morning, the nerves are starting to kick in. The outfitter's been sending us camtracker pic's of bucks the size of which I've never seen before. Even if I don't tag one I'm sure it will be the best hunt of my life. Is it really the "magical" place everyone that's hunted it says it is?

I've hunted that county before. I rattled in a big buck(150 class?)there in 2001(missed).
I also jumped a big one on the same property hunting pheasants. It's amazing the little bit of cover a buck will hide in out there.Even the does are really big!You won't be disappointed, good luck.

Yellowdog,
How long will you be in Iowa?

katie

Good luck.  Hope our weather changes before you get in.  The wind has been nuts!!!!  I live in zone 5.  Tip-my big boys have been moving between 11am and noon.

Ron, will be there until the 8th or 9th. The plan is if we tag out in Iowa the guy we're hunting with has property in Missouri so we'll drop down there, buy a tag over the counter, and hopefully take a 2nd buck in Missouri. Getting WAY ahead of myself, but that's the plan for now.

Google Jackson county, Iowa and new potential record.  It wasn't a trad kill but it will get your blood pumping.

Katie, with the new moon, plan is to stay in the stand all day. At least here in Michigan now is the best time to hit it. Rut just starting to fire up and the moon phase is just right.

Good luck!  The bucks are starting to move.  I saw a huge 10 pointer from the stand Saturday night and things are just going to get better the next couple weeks!

katie

Almost ran over a 10 pointer with the car today.  I called tonight and had 5 come in.  It was nuts.  Bleet can twice then 3 grunts.

You guys leasing land or hunting public?

Katie,
I'm hunting private land.
There is about 400-500 acres of pubic close to me.

And I thought Iowa was just corn and hogs???

Good luck to you.  Every serious whitetail hunter deserves to hunt in a good area once in awhile.  I hope you have an encouter with the buck of your dreams.

katie

The corn and the hogs are great as well.  Just had some amazing bacon out of a neighbors hog!  What I love about Iowa.  I could not hunt on Monday.  Went to the bedroom about 6pm to change my clothes and a buck was comming up the corn leading him to my bathroom window.  I keep the screen out of the window for rabbits and pheasnts.  I opened thre window and ran to get my bow.  He got to 30 yards and my little girl screamed at her brother.  He bolted.  But, I got to hunt on my off day from my bathroom.  Can't beat that!

Saw two 150ish bucks fighting last night.........and another buck come out and check all 11 does in a picked corn field.......and two new huge scrapes under my stand........so I think you are hitting it perfect time wise.
