Stallion paint-a-long

I'd like to say first, all that you hear about the Quinn Stallion is true.  It's my all time favorite bow.  That said, here is how to personalize it.

I used Krylon ultra-flat camo spray paint that I picked up at the local hardware store along with some 0000 steel wool, for scratching the surface, and some painters tape, for cutting out the pattern.



The pattern that I'm going to use is Mossy Oak bottomland.  I have a couch in my room that is in the treestand pattern, but bottomland is the base.

I had already wrestled a shur grip onto the riser, so I just folded it back on each end and applied painters tape to protect.  Also covered the cork with tape.  I used an old bolt to screw in the top limb hole and attached a parachute cord to be able to hang the riser to dry.  I then took the steel wool and just scuffed the riser until the shine was gone and cleaned with alcohol.



Next, I applied a couple of coats of black.  This will be the color of the smallest pattern.  The next step is the most time consuming, cutting out the patterns.  I used the bottom side of a plastic storage box lid for my cutting table.  DO NOT DO THIS ON THE KITHCEN TABLE!  You have to have something that the tape will stick to, but will not be stuck to, and the knife will not damage.  I had an extra piece of material beside me for reference.  I start out with the smallest pattern first and just cut the pieces out and apply them to the riser, after the black has dried of course.

After you have the small pattern in place, you paint the color of the next pattern.  In this case, brown.



You then cut out the pattern for the brown part and apply to the riser.  Leaving the other tape in place, just tape over everything.

The last step of painting is to apply the background color, khaki.

When you carefully peel the tape off, the layers are going to be uneven and if you are like me and go from a inside a cool house to outside in the Alabama humidity, the tape may not stay stuck as well as you would like and you may have a little paint where you didn't want it.  Just take the steel wool and rub smooth.  You can apply a little more pressure where you are trying to even out the lines, but don't get out of hand.  Here is the almost finished product.  Colors are sometimes hard to match perfect, but this one is close enough for me.

Here is the finished bow.  I put about 3-4 coats of matte clearcoat on it.  It was dull enough that I didn't use the steel wool on the clear.  I just sprayed a coat and let it dry....spray a coat and let it dry...you get the idea.  I hope this was informative to you.  I am no professional and really don't have a ton of patience, so if you are willing to sit down and cut out the patterns in some tape, anyone can do this.

Nice job. Probably would be easier to buy the brown riser version to do this with then?

It doesn't matter David.  You are painting over everything.  If your smallest pattern was going to be brown, then it wouldn't hurt, but I don't think it matters.

Here is my Stallion that I camoed earlier this year with the same Krylon and an airbrush. I thought it turned out pretty good.....until I saw yours  :eek:      That is a great job!





Are you bringing the Stallion to the HH tomorrow? I'd love to see it up close.

Thanks guys.  It's not hard at all, you just have to take the time to cut out the pattern.  I believe that ASAT and Predator would be a breeze, because of the bigger pattern.  I just like the looks of the Mossy Oak.

Mark, that's no slouch job my friend, very professional looking, just a different color camo.  I've just gotten home from the HH shoot.  Sorry that I missed you, but with 40 targets and us shooting two rounds, it took all day.  I'm sure that we'll run into each other at the August shoot.
