Hi Guys,
My brother has some MFX 400's that he is willing to part with.  My question is, could I get these arrows to work out of 53# bows if I keep them at 28" long?  If so, how?

I would say they may be stiff at that length , depends on how close to center the bow is cut. I shoot the 400's at 31 " out of my 55# longbow with 200 gr up front . hope this helps.  Drew

Were shooting some 400s with 100-150gs out of 53-56# recurves at 29" or so.  You may need a little more weight up front.

If they're not cut or if they're cut and the inserts haven't been installed you could order some brass inserts that weight 100 grains.  I'm building some Easton Axis 400's with brass inserts to use out of longbow and recurve...both aren't cut to center so the weight up front is going to be key.  

I'm planning on a total of between 200 and 250 up front including the brass insert to be the ticket with my set-ups.  Recurve is #46@29.5" and my longbow is #50@28" so I'm in the same boat as yours.  Except my arrows are 30.5" long.  I've been shooting Beman Classic MFX 500's with 125 grains and 145 grains up front with the standard inserts with my longbow and recurve respectively.

Good luck...as a side not I finally got my recurve shooting the 500's great...I had to add a piece of leather under my strike plate on the bow to soften up the spine.  I was shooting 145 grains and they were a touch over spine and with 170 grains up front they were just under spine.  I added just a touch of leather and they are zipping in great.

My bows are cut past center, pulled to 53lbs. My MFX are 28 1/4" with 100gr brass insert and 200 grain tip.  Finish out at 610 grains.  I tuned them to fly just a tad weak.  I think you've got a good chance of making them work.

You guys have answered my question, I have some Axis 400's that I purchased about two months ago, I fletch them up with Blazers cock feather black and to red, I did take the label off because I felt they look better that way, but never did shoot them, I was planning on using them for either my "whip" or my Bob Lee, but both of those bows are 43#, they would be too stiff, and I would not want to shoot that much weight upfront to make them work.  I think I paid $85 for the bare shafts.  I think I will put them up on the classifieds.

I don't want to try and make something work, it never seems to turn out as good as doing what's right.  I want a arrow weight of 440 to 475 at the most.  And I do have Axis 500's to accomplish that.

I got a 51@28 turkey creek and axis 400 with 100 grain brass inserts and 125 grain heads shoot like darts.  They are cut to 31" and I have a 30" draw so I am pulling 56 lbs.  The bow is cut to center.
