Alot of fantastic bows coming out this year. Looks like I have to cheat a bit this year   ;)   ..work has been non stop for me.

Got the bamboo backing glued to my osage slat with urac yesterday afternoon. Now I'm waiting for the glue to cure a little before unclamping.

I have a limb in the oven right now, can't wait to see what it'll look like, as this is my first adventure into clear glass land! High hopes! It's good to finally get started on this. Pictures to follow.

John I hope it turns out for ya, I am sure it will.

Just looked over the pic thread and man what a great looking bunch of bows.

This is my swap bow at 16"@45lbs. I'm shooting for the 50# mark. How does it look?

Looks nice, citycop.

Took all the clamps off this afternoon and reduced the slat down to the bow profile. Then I rasped my handle block slightly to fit the slat a little better. Now the handle is clamped and glued up.

This is my first try with urac and bamboo. The bamboo isn't bad to work with and the urac seems to have gone on well, too.

Now I have a question. How do you take the 'rind' off the bamboo? Scrape it, sand it?

Hopefully I'll be tillering in a couple of days.

canopyboy

I've had good luck scraping the rind.  Comes off real easy that way.

Yeah I crape it with a sharp paint scraper or even my draw knife backwards.  It come's off pretty easy just don't let your scraper jump or chatter,  so you don't gauge the boo.

Thanks, Canopyboy and Cuban Missile.

Stan you can use a scraper, but you need to be very careful not to nick the boo. You still have to sand lightly after using the scraper. So I normally just sand off the rind.

Here are a couple pics of my tradebow so far.  It has been a tough one.  The twists and roller coasters have given me some trouble.  I still have an issue with the string being a little off center.

One pic at brace and the other immediately after unstrung.  Any help would be appreciated.  I still have some weight to take off and I may put a single layer of sinew on in the end.

red hill

That looks pretty good, David. Do you plan to flip the tips, or induce reflex?

Roy, when you sand the rind, do you use a medium grit paper or something a little fine? I don't plan to remove the rind until later in the process and I know not to sand down the nodes.

Red, I've had so much trouble with this stave I don't think I'm gonna do either.  After the stave rested for thirty minutes or so it is pretty well dead straight.  I'm sure it will take a little set but hopefully not too much.

KellyG

David it looks pretty good. If it is off just a bit. You can "cheat" buy making your nocks deeper on one side then the other to make the string track closer to center.

broketooth

ive been trying to work in secrecy, until now.this is hickory stave #2. its 66" tip to tip. 2" wide @ fades and tapers to 1 1/2" 2/3 of the limb, then it tapers to 1/2 tips. i placed the handle between two big knots, one at each fade.got the bow on the tree, its on the short string and braced to 4". ive got it drawn to 18" on the tree and have been exercising the hell out of it. the string tracks pretty good so no issues there. at this point . here are some pics. this stave is also showing signs of taking on some set, which i didnt want.i know it needs to bend more from mid limb out, just having some trouble getting it to do so. what are your thoughts. rv

razorback

Go slow and get the outer limbs bending more so the inner 1/3rd doesn't do all the work and take on anymore set. It is much worse when set occurs near the fades. A little at the fades equals a lot at the tips. Looking real good other than that.

Rudy you pretty much nailed it.... "i know it needs to bend more from mid limb out" I'd just keep scraping and working the flat spots out.
