I been searching for a decent osage for a year and finaly found one last weekend.

The top of it was all tangled up in other trees. To make it easier cutting it up with an old buck saw, I cut the top off first. I knew the tree was not going to fall with just a bottom cut and that might cause my saw to pinch and then I'd have to chop with an axe. I cut in about to center all the way around the tree and used my splitting wedges to pop the center loose and the top of the tree came right off. This was the weight from the top would pull it out of my way. It worked great, but I had to carry in my ladder too!

This all took about 3 1/2 hours.

Some nice rings in this one and it is probably the biggest tree I ever tackled

While hiking out to take my ladder and tools back to the jeep, I found a nice deer track. The candy bar is for size comparison....

Another 2 hours to roll, and drag it to the jeep. I almots never got it inot the jeep.

Good find. I used to live across the river in Huntington and I don't think I ever saw any osage around.

So much for the one Osage Orange tree that took a year to find.

And they don't sprout up over night ya know.

I have about 15-20 straight feet of a Black Cherry log that is aobut 8-10 inches diameter.  It has been there about 1 year.  It is going to be waisted.

Nice hunk of wood.  Growth rings look good.  Think it might have been a little easier getting it to the jeep if you had split it first?  :bigsmyl:

Orion, then I would have had to make another trip.  :smileystooges:

What.... after all that work with a buck saw you cheated and used a jeep to get it home! You could've weaved a harness out of reeds and strapped it to your back or something.   :biglaugh:    :biglaugh:

Good find Joe.    I'd like to see your work sometime. Maybe we could shoot at Bladen's sometime this spring.
