I'm looking at applying for a job that would relocate me to Victoria, Texas. I know all about the land issues for hunting in Texas, but what's the hunting like on that area? What critters are available? Any hogs? Other than trad bowhumting, my other passions are waterfowling and fly fishing. I know water is sparse on Texas, but if there are any opportunities feel free to mention them if you can! This job is far from a slam dunk, but id like to know what I'm getting myself into if I get it. Thanks!

Don't know much about Victoria, but google
Coleto Creek Park.  Pretty close to Victoria.  Looks like an inviting place to kick back and hang out with the flyrod.  I'm guessin' hogs aren't too far away.  Texas members are sure to have good area knowledge.

I'm not sure about the bow hunting, I think there's some public land down on the coast I here guys do well on. As for the hogs I'm sure there plentiful in that area. There is public land bow hunting in Texas you just got to do your homework and not be afraid to drive a little. But as for Waterfowl Victoria is real close to some of the best duck and goose hunting you can find, and fishing the Texas coast your possibilities are nearly endless. If you like to hunt and fish you really can't beat Texas. Once you get your bowhunting situation figured out down there, you will be busy year round.

There are all kinds of critters around that area. Most ground is private, so you either have to know somebody or lease. Lots of pigs, deer, turkeys and such. Not too far away from free range nilgai, but again, you have to figure out how you are going to get access. I know nothing about the fishing other than you are close to the coast where there is a vast salt water fishery and opportunities!

Good luck in your new ventures!

Thanks, guys! There's far from any guarantee that I have a chance at this job but the area is starting to look very promising! I'll definitely be looking for more info of I get this job!

I grew up on the Texas coast fishing/flyfishing/hunting/bowhunting and also have a ranch near there, outside of Goliad. There is a lot of private property but that doesn't mean you can't either lease, or find public hunting within close proximity.

Victoria is in a great location for wildlife. You have Whitetail, Pigs, Turkey, Rabbit, Quail, Dove, Geese, Duck, Sandhill Crane, and Javelina.

Coleto Creek Reservoir and Management Area does a bowhunting draw for bucks and does every season and is also a good fishing/bowfishing lake for Hybrid Stripers, White Bass, Largemouth Bass, Catfish, Crappie, Bluegill, Carp, and Buffalo!

Your in very close proximity to the coast with 45 minute access to Lavaca Bay, San Antonio Bay, Matagorda Bay and Copano Bay which all provide great fishing/flyfishing for Redfish and Trout. This area is also excellent for Duck hunting... hell you can even draw a tag and get an Alligator out of the Guadalupe Delta WMA.

I'll also add that duck hunting on the coast is all public access.

Here is a great link from TPWD that shows Public Hunting areas on a map

I would also suggest navigating around TPWD's website for a lot of helpful information.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any more questions please feel free to post them in this thread or PM me, I'd be happy to help!

Thanks, TxSportsman! Now I'm really excited! Like i said, its far from a sure thing, but it'd be a great career opportunity and sounds like a wonderful area for an outdoorsman to live! It'll be a long process before I know if I get the job, but I'll definitely follow up with you (and the rest of tradgang) if I do!

Been through Victoria many, many times on my way home to Riviera  TX.

Lots of deer hunting around there as you've probably seen. TX is truly an amazing place for outdoor pursuits. Fishing of all types is close by.

Good luck on the job search and moving to TX from PA will be quite a change. You'll get used to "winter" in TX really quickly!!

Jcar, I enjoy winter, but I'm ready for a change! I know summers are rough but I've lived in Georgia and I'm originally from Maryland, myself so I'm no stranger to heat. Boonsboro is a nice area.

I was born and raised here in Victoria. Hogs are everywhere and all types of animals to hunt. Waterfowl are very plentiful on the coast which is about 30 minutes from here. You can also fly fish for redfish which is popular.

Leases are tough to find but there are some opportunities with public hunting and Outfitters.

Good luck,
